I just gave up. I watched and read many videos/articles and I couldn’t fin any differences between am and pm
We can just trot off in the complete opposite way together

I only saw it mentioned sometimes! About 70% of the time, they just said ‘between noon and the hour hand’ and I was like, but which side??? AM or PM??? Ahhhhhh!!!
At this point I’m tempted to read ahead and cheat

Maybe it’s a trick question and all of the decisions are game overs!! Maybe there’s a secret fourth option written in lemon juice and we need to hold the paper over a flame to reveal it

It’s afternoon, because the start of the section is

(But it’s 3:40pm nearish the equator, so no, but 
)
It says to 短針を太陽に向ける, that’s the green line where the hour hand is.
Then 短針と12時の方向がつくる角度のまん中が、南になる
So the middle of the angle beyond 12 and the hour hand is south. So ~2 is S, ~5 is W, and SW would be ~4???
Edit:
If the book is just wrong and you use the big angle and not the small one, I’d agree it’s about 10.

Yeahh…based on 10 exactly matching SW if you use the big angle, I think the book might have done the calculation wrong and used the big angle… I feel like I’m being gaslit though

It also concerns me that there are two SW options, if you use the big angle, although one (9:00) is much more SSW than the other, so I say 10. But I’m also happy to also just give up in the sand.

Exactly - 9 is SSW and 10 is WSW.
An exact southwest doesn’t exist, as the compass cardinal points change position every three markers on the watch face. 
I do think the book is just wrong… 
I think the real answer is South = 2:00
I was sick for the last week, and sure that I had been left behind. I’ll be catching up today (If I can find the book 
). So excited to see I wasn’t!
Have escaped the snowy (not so snowy but 20 deg F at night) mtns… But not home yet and @mitrac probably still has stolen my book…
made it to a hotel nice and safe after camping for a week… Yeah shower nice!
Also my buddy build a sun dial… So had to tell him about everyone stuck in the dessert…

Avoiding the jackals, our troop decides to use some handy dandy knowledge that we pulled out of somewhere or other to try walk in the direction of salvation. Unfortunately our memories must not be that good because we’ve completely forgotten how this watch direction business is supposed to work. Let’s blame it on a dodgy source 
We decide to head off towards 9 o clock, which is hopefully a south / south western direction… hopefully…
