コンビニ人間 🍱 Repeat Book Club

It does, right?

I don’t use Floflo myself; I prefer Anki. I wish there was some way to get the data out.

Ow, thanks a mil! I tried to search for it and only found a custom order page. May be my pc is playing tricks on me today. Happy to be wrong :stuck_out_tongue:

If you sub to the creators patreon, you can export books. I put books in Anki and it’s been a tremendous help. I still use the site to track known vocab.

That sounds like it could be worthwhile! The lists are computer generated, right? Do you find the vocab/meaning generally reliable?

There’s sometimes misparses, but less so if you use frequency 2 or higher. Generally hasn’t been an issue, as you can most of the time notice them sticking out, or at least at the time you see words in the book in context.

Personally I pre-learn the words to make reading smoother, but you could also do it while reading.

You can put your wk level in when you generate the word list, but other than that point I haven’t seen anywhere else

Just placed my order for the book, I chose a cheaper (i.e. slower) shipping option but it should still arrive in time for the 19th…fingers crossed

We could also discuss the pace. I have seen that the original book club has an average of 11.8 pages per week in the span of 13 weeks. Apparently there are no chapters, but they looked for natural breaks. I have started pre-reading and it has taken me ages to read two pages. I don’t think I can make 11 pages in one week at this rate. We could make a poll to see if we keep the same speed or divide every week in two parts. In this case it would take 26 weeks. Or some other option.

Hmmm I don’t think I would want to spend 6 months on the same book but it could be good to see where others stand. Even with Kiki I felt like by the end I had forgotten a lot from the earlier chapters. Splitting the difference might be an option but it would make it harder to use the same discussion threads as the old club. Perhaps a head start schedule could provide a good compromise, or we could go with a ramp-up schedule as people get used to the writing style (I know my speed with Kiki increased significantly after the first two or three chapters). These solutions might be in line with the Beginner/Intermediate ability target for the club. Also, unless there are any major objections it looks like January 9 will be the starting date. As eager as I am to start, waiting a bit will give people more time to get their books, study some vocab, and perhaps get a head start. I’ll post a pace poll when I create a club home thread tonight or tomorrow.

I still have this with basically every book I read, at first I think I don’t make any progress, but once I get used to writing style, vocab etc, it gets a lot easier.

You could also reuse this thread as the home thread (and rename the title) then everything is together in one place?

I’ve already started reading and I’m almost done with the first chapter, so the sooner the better for me

Either of these seem good to me. Right now, the thought of reading 11 pages per week still seems daunting, but I’m sure it’ll get significantly easier over time, so I’m not too keen on sticking with a slow schedule for the whole book.

I understand that more than 6 months is quite a long time. I will do some pre-reading in the hope to get better with time. My main problem is all the kanji I don’t know. It would make more sense to be around level 30. Actually I thought that by the time I finished Kiki I would be closer to 30 than I am. The reason is precisely because I priorized being in time with Kiki’s schledule to doing lessons and reviews. Well, しょうがない.

You could always buy a digital version so it’s easier to look up unknown words/kanji.

Which e-book seller would you recommend? (I don’t own a kindle)

This page contains an overview of the available options:

(under “Buying Books”). My personal favourite is BookWalker, the app is not amazing but fair to use imho. Just be aware that those books are usually tied to the app of the store, you cannot download them as PDF or something.
(If you really hate that, I think there are some threads on the forums that talk about getting books without this coupling, but I’ve never tried out any of those solutions. Maybe somebody else can advise in that case?)

I think that’s where I bought 霧 and I couldn’t download it. I was surprised at first, but then I more or less managed. I didn’t like reading with an e-book because I like much better a proper book. But using it as a tool to get the reading of the kanji is a great idea. Thank you @seanblue and @NicoleIsEnough!

Yes, that’s what I was referring to, you need to install their app and then you can read the book inside the app.

glances at level

I would probably not be able to read most of my books if I didn’t have the help of the integrated dictionary

Apologies if this sounds harsh, but since it took ages to read 2 pages, perhaps this book is beyond your level for now? I mean, why to torture yourself if you would be able to read it more comfortably in 4-6 months?
Well, at least I stepped back from this book in the past and chose 銭天堂 and 霧のむこうふしぎな町 instead.
As for the pace, I’d keep the original one, with intention to go faster
