カードキャプターさくら・Card Captor Sakura Offshoot Book Club🌸Vol 5 - COMPLETE!

Side note : we reached the anime episode where Meilin enters, and I really hope she only exists in anime fillers.

All wrapped on book 5! I may have bought books 6 and 7 on a few kinokuniya trips… Its just too tempting when I see them there! Also side note, I watched a handful of anime episodes with my partner and it’s quite interesting just how different and yet also the same it is. I’ll keep watching it, but at a verrrrry slow pace as we don’t watch tv together all that often

Congratulations on finishing the volume

As per usual, I have been slammed with life and missed like two weeks of book club. Then I just started reading until I felt I hit the natural stopping point, and turns out I’m a bit ahead again so I can’t talk about what I want to :person_facepalming: It is so strange to me where the standard edition decided to end chapters/volumes!! I kept plowing through on the AE edition until conversations finish and there is a scene change, but I guess those last 5-6 pages are the start of a new volume for standard edition? I gotta dig into it a bit because I’m really curious why the original editions end in such unnatural spots, it almost feels like a choice as a result of weekly manga magazine page limits or something like that.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve seen the anime, but I don’t remember 観月先生 at all. Can any anime watchers speak to if she has a major role? Just curious how much my memory is failing me

Can’t speak to the anime part, but the ‘weird’ stopping points are definitely a weekly serialized release artifact. You want the reader to come back next week/chapter, so you have to be sure to end just before the climax and not give the reader the resolution.

Or monthly in the case of Cardcaptor Sakura.

I haven’t seen the variance in which pages are in which volumes per edition, so my best guess is that some months ended on a cliffhanger that felt better shifted to another volume in later releases.

Been quite some time since I last watched as well, but as best I can remember, her role wasn’t any different from the manga. Very much a “no more, no less” type of situation, adjusting for episodes being longer than chapters, and filler episodes.

The vol 6 reading pace poll is now available! Head over and let us know how quickly you want to read the next volume.

Based on my experiences reading AE while the vast majority of users here OG/RE, it seems OG/RE volumes pretty consistently end an entire chapter behind AE (which has now added up to a situation where everyone else is changing volumes while I am still halfway through an AE volume). They tend to cut off any epilogue and shove what (to me) seems to be the obvious conclusion to a chapter into the start of the next chapter. It’s just a bit odd, but it makes more sense from the perspective of “cliffhanger to get the reader to read the next issue” marketing.

You’ll be in the middle of volumes when we’re at the end for the next three volumes – you can see in the schedule in the home post.

I thought the anniversary edition just had a different number of chapters per volume, though – I wasn’t aware that the chapters would even end on different pages. That’s a bit confusing, but good to know! I’ll keep this in mind when cropping last pages for future volumes.

Things seem to be heading toward a climax!

OG, Page 178

Meanwhile, what is li saying on page 178. It looks like なのにはにゃ~んとかなんとか, but I’m not sure, especially of the first と. はにゃ~ん I think has been discussed before, the English translations uses “floaty”. So something like “Anyway, she’s floaty or something”?

page 178

I think it’s just
なのに
はにゃーん (discussed before, whatever that means)
とかなんとか

So just “…and still you [keep going] “hanyan” and all…” with an eluded verb.

I might be a bit out to lunch on this, as I’m relying on my terrible memory. I’ll make a note if I notice a specific instance of this again!

Vol 6: Week 1 is here!

Woohoo! It’s the 6th volume of the series – we’re almost halfway there!

We’ll also be doing out first reading pace increase of the series!

If you’re done with Vol 5, come join us in the new thread!

ok I think I might have fallen victim to “looking at the wrong last panel” again. Is this week’s assigned reading the last of volume 5 or the start of volume 6?

So the new weeks always start on a Saturday (EST), but I post them Friday night so that they’re available for Saturday morning!

The week ending Aug 29 is the end of volume 5, and the week starting Aug 30 is the start of volume 6.
