カードキャプターさくら・Card Captor Sakura Offshoot Book Club🌸Vol 4 - Starting May 10th!

I think the only difference between Sakura and Li here is that Kaho is Sakura’s type so she ignores all the danger signs :joy:

I’ve just finished Chapter 4. Another card-light chapter, and unfortunately also Kero-light.

One question:

OG Page 74

Sakura thinks “こわいっていって ちょっと いっしょに いさせてもらおう!” I think いさせて is the causative of いる, so something like “If I say I’m scared, they’ll let me stay with them for a little while”. But why the volitional form もらおう?

Fun activity: take your English translation and try to map it back to the Japanese sentence. In this case, there is nothing for “if” in Sakura’s dialogue.

Doing this has helped me many times to catch where I’m filling in things that aren’t there in the original.

The volitional form expresses intention. Think of it like saying “I will [do]” in English.

An English translation might be “I’ll say I’m scared and ask to stay with them for a little while!”

Thanks @ChristopherFritz for your input! I’ve definitely done the same – filling in the gaps can speed up reading but if I’m too quick I can read entirely the wrong meaning from a sentence.

I just wanted to mention, I had the last panels for week 5 and week 7 mixed up. (The page numbers were correct.) I’ve fixed that now!

This week’s reading has made me revise my thoughts on Sakura and Li’s sensing abilities: The difference between them seems to be Li has more discipline and training, so he catches things much earlier than Sakura. When Li tells Sakura to focus, she can figure things out too. That being said, Sakura refuses to even consider Kaho as a potential threat because she thinks Kaho is pretty, so no amount of goading from Li will help her notice whatever abilities Kaho might have :joy:

Thanks, @ChristopherFritz. Not sure where I got the “if” from.

So much going on this week that I almost fell behind, but thankfully this half of the chapter felt pretty light! I’m liking this part - curious to see where it goes.

Really enjoyed the end of this chapter – felt a big progress moment when some of the more lore-type panels were actually making sense to me! The ‘ghost story’ reveal at the end was funny too

The lore is definitely getting easier to comprehend with time

At the end, the reason people didn’t return on the bridge is because they actually gave up before they even got to the bridge and left on a different path, right?

As a side note, it’s nice to see a character falling for someone of a similar age who isn’t related to them :joy:

Hmmm I’d have to look back to be certain, but I don’t remember mention of them giving up before getting to the bridge - just that they found another way out

Omg…I thought I was on pace and then I must have seen that panel when it was mixed up. I was wondering how I had missed like 40 pages from one week to another. I was soooo confused but I just read up to week 7, and then I finished the rest of the volume this week :person_facepalming: I assumed I completely screwed up

I’m sorry for the confusion :sob:
I guess you can take a two week break now if you like c:

This is about the people in Naoko’s story? I think the 向こう here is beyond the shrine, so they went to the shrine and then past it to the other exit.

I am a little confused about the part about the stairs. When Naoko says うん on the bottom of page 135 (OG), is that more a “yeah, about that…”, and the actual answer is on the next page?

Yeah agreed, I opened the book and definitely sounds like it’s past the shrine. On the note about page 135, easy mistake to make, but tomoyo actually says ‘怪談’ instead of '階段’ here. Same reading of かいだん but the former means ghost story, so shes saying. “Oh so it’s wasn’t a ghost story then, was it?”, and Naoko is affirming, which also explains our resident ghost hater’s relief (sakura)

This is mad impressive though haha - well done

Thanks, @jablekanji ! That’ll teach me to just read the furigana.
Then Naoka is making a pun. It’s not a かいだん (怪談 ghost story), but there were かいだん (階段 stairs).. When I get home I’ll have to check what that did with that in the English translation.. Nope, I misread that one too. It’s “But there are ghost stories too”

It’s been a busy week, but I’m still here and still reading!

I’m impressed that Sakura actually felt bad that Yukito might be lonely since his grandparents are away, instead of thinking “awesome, now I have an excuse to invite him over!” I know she invited him over anyways, but at least there was some legitimate concern on her part :joy:

Also, the sidebar about Kaho is cute. I wonder why she doesn’t like marshmallows?
