Well, I just finished chapter 8. What fun! I hadn’t realized how much I missed Yotsuba-chan. 🙂

Actually, I have to confess, after we finished volume 1, I didn’t want to stop, so I sat down and read vol. 2 very casually, simply skipping anything I didn’t understand. That was fun, but it was also some months ago, and so I’ve forgotten most of it by now. I’m looking forward to joining you all on a more careful reading over the coming weeks.

I’m having problems understanding Miura again!
She says: あれがさー上手だったからさー
This is my breakdown and question:

あれ - “that (picture)”
が - particle (“subject marker”)
さー - casual sentence ending particle similar to the English “like”
上手 - じょうず - adjective meaning skilled, good at, etc
**だった - this is where I’m having problems. Perhaps だ is like でした, but what is った??**
から - so, because
さー - that casual sentence ending particle again

Thank you!

Oh blimey! I feel like a right idiot! Thank you @BobaGakusei!
These blind spots just come up out of nowhere! No sooner do you learn something new than you forgot what you learnt before! Thanks again! I am making progress, and it’s thanks to the patience and kindness of you and many others here!

I’d recommend learning the て form list:

If it ends with ~ = replace it with ~
い、ち、り = って
み、び、に = んで
し = して
き = いて
ぎ = いで
Main exceptions:
来ます = 来て
します = して
行きます = 行って

And you can apply this to た as well, to make verbs into past tense. (Just changing て for た)

I learnt this as a song at uni. Sadly, I can’t sing it for you, but it certainly came in handy. The trick was remembering not to sing it aloud during exams. 🤫

I know it from the song as well. xD
That’s how they taught us in school so they didn’t mind if we sang it. 😛

Great! Just finished reading chapter 8 and loved it!
Just as in vol.1, the art work was wonderful, the characters fun, and the humour lovely.
I even learnt some Japanese - thanks to all you good people here.
Now I’ll spend the rest of the week brushing up on the て-form (thank you @Kazzeon!), and looking forward to starting chapter 9 on Sunday!

The translation from Yotsuba-speak to more formal Japanese seemed mostly mechanical, but I’m not particularly confident in it. There’s a lot of grammar points that might not have a more formal equivalent (like ~かな, and the greetings おっす), and I hope I included the right particles, since many of them were omitted. After doing this, I feel much more motivated to study grammar.

Also, let me know if the formatting can be improved. I wanted to make it easier for beginners to parse word boundaries, so I included spaces and “furigana”.

みうらちゃん は 来ました
I would say が is better here.
みうらちゃん が 来ました

まっね or まあね is not exactly an affirmation like そうですね, it’s more like, “sort of…”

I think the あれ here is not あれは as in, “that is?/what’s that?” but more of surprise, like “huh?”.

おすないで → 押 **さ** ないで

Pretty good job once again!

@Kazzeon: Thanks for the corrections! I really appreciate it.

1. I was debating between が and は but wasn’t sure. I suppose が is better since the topic isn’t really Miura.
2. Regarding Fuuka’s drawing skill. How about まあまあです (so-so)? I wasn’t sure what to say.
3. You’re right. That’s more of a huh? I’ll take out the は.
4. Oops, I messed that one up.

@Chellykins: I’m glad you like it!

That would be accurate.
Np, it’s my pleasure. 🙂

I live this scene and figured it out the other day. I was walking to a small lake today with my very small one and they said “Look Daddy! Ocean!” … and I felt like quoting Miura.

Maybe don’t grab your Yotsuba’s head as you do so, though. 😛

When I first started with vol. 1, I wanted to understand the heck out of everything in every panel on every page. I was soon overwhelmed with my inability to “read”, instead relying on translations and word lists, etc. Still, I eventually finished.

Today was my first opportunity to read ch. 8 since I had a free afternoon. I couldn’t get my computer to download the vol. 2 vocab pack, but I figured Jisho and Google would have my back. To my surprise, I actually got through the chapter pretty quickly. @BobaGakusei’s translations helped.

Then, I even read ahead! I finished chapter 9! I even understood most of it! There were some grammary things I didn’t quite follow, but I’ve taken the advice of not reading too indepth to heart, and found I’m actually reading a lot more than I was before. This is so exciting!
