Please correct phrasing in my thread title if it is wrong or clunky ^___^

So, I learned 自殺 (じさつ) a long time ago, meaning suicide. I just now learned another way to say this, 自決 (じけつ). I have two and a half questions, and am hoping someone might know the answers:

  1. For this particular set of similar words, which is more commonly used? Is this based on dialect, region, etc.?
  2. Are there particular situations where you’d use one over the other/one would be more natural, or are they truly just level ground synonyms?

If you’re feeling really brave, suggest another pair of similar, seemingly interchangeable words and explain their subtleties :slight_smile:

自決 is a bit more out dated, and 自殺 is the more common one, the one you’d see used in daily conversation

Excellent! Thank you :clap: I thought 自殺 was the more common one. I haven’t heard or read the other one at any point throughout my studies, so when I saw it come up earlier today I was scratching my head a bit.
