Game Systems / Tips

  • Saving happens at the end of each day when you write in your diary.
  • Remember that starting on day 2 you can pull out your bug net at any time (right trigger on PSP)!
  • Registering the bugs (creating a 標本) can be unintuitive at first – First, this must be done in Boku’s room at the desk (it’s a good thing to do before bed!). Select the bug in your box, select 出す, pull it down and place it on the screen below. Then you use the needle, into the pink liquid, and finally into the bug. This removes it from the box, registers this specimen permanently, and gives you a little description.
  • Try to interact with anything that looks interesting. There is a lot of flavor text and even many paths where Boku can hop to places that require pressing interact on them.
  • I have heard time passes when you transition between screens, so you don’t need to feel rushed within a location. When the day ends, Boku’s uncle will find you and take you home.

Game Manual

In this post TheNerdyNova helpfully provided us with images of the game’s manual which include a map, tips for bugs and fishing, advice for progressing certain quests, cute art, and more!

Boku no Spoilers (Please read)

It’s customary in these clubs to collapse or otherwise hide your in-depth explanations of what happened for the week. I would just like to also request that because this game features so much optional and non-linear content, that you use your best judgment for what might be worth hiding, and do your best to make it generally clear outside the tags what you’re discussing. For example, in my week 1 post I referenced locations (the hideout and the shed) where I think interesting things happened but I further spoiler tagged discussion of what happened within them in case anyone who hadn’t visited one yet wanted to save the surprise.

Set this thread to “Watching” to get updates!

Luckily I largely had my post typed up already as I played so I could keep the days separate correctly. Gonna go on and post while I’m having an ok period cause who knows what the next days will look like for me now :upside_down_face:

Week 2 spoilers

Day 4

This is easily my favorite day so far, now that Shirabe decided she wants to hang out with us she’s so cute and funny. I got 小吉 luck from the jizo statues with her, not sure if the first time is totally random or not. Her little manic tour was really fun and the aunt wanting to take a photo of us is so real. Though Boku is such a nice, agreeable kid; I’m surprised as a little kid he didn’t complain about taking the photo at all. I guess when it’s not your immediate family it might be different, too.

During the Shirabe trip I stopped to look at the hunting sign again and that seemed to trigger the appearance of a watermelon thief, I think? Boku hid and didn’t actually talk to the boy, who left after hearing wolf sounds just when he was about to find us . Otherwise this day was mostly about Shirabe, though I did meet this new guy. Not sure what his deal is, he left to say he wanted to go look at something but I couldn’t find him afterwards.

My main goal at this point is to become better friends with Shirabe.

Day 5

On the other hand, this was the first day I felt pretty directionless, at least during the day. Some of the explanation about what the uncle is up to with the fireflies flew past me worse than most lines but I caught adult Boku’s comment about this being his one chance to see them. I quite like the inclusions that make it clear he’s reminiscing on a past holiday. Certainly this game is appropriate for kids, but it feels to me like the main appeal of it is for those of us who aren’t children anymore to experience some simulation of the childlike wonder we used to have, so it puts us on the same level as him, thinking back.

I’ve remembered to water the plants still every day, happy about that one. Boku’s aunt told me I could play a dinner guessing game if I came back in the evening, so I made a note of that and started wandering. Spotted the uncle in his pottery shed and had a little chat. Continuing from what I did before in the shed, I had to examine the shelf I broke again to get him to comment that it must have not been stable enough, so that explains why I’m not being scolded. He doesn’t actually know I did it.

Spotted Moe’s friend again who is up to some 偵察 on the bridge but didn’t have much else to tell me. Shirabe told me to spam the jizo statues until I got the best luck so I did that, haha. Kind of feels like she’s just being goofy and it doesn’t do anything but, after cheating and retrying a bunch, I got the very lucky fortune.

Otherwise I mostly wandered! Spotted the bridge kid again who just wanted to ask if I had made any friends and acted like he was a sad loner. Found a little dead end river where you can also fish which was down a split I didn’t travel down before

And I got this very cool big butterfly! My favorite bug so far.

But in the end nothing big was happening and I actually intentionally passed time a little after I got back home to play the dinner guessing game. Which is… really just picking one of the options randomly I think. I was wrong :frowning:

Night time is the main event though! Of course I went out and found the fireflies, which means Boku does tell lies sometimes! I made him a liar, anyway. Finding them was so cool, it’s like what I said about the childlike wonder. In the end, nothing really happens. You walk out far enough and then there are some fireflies. But the way the music dramatically starts up helps sell that this is some magical, impactful occasion. To Boku this is really cool and a big deal, all the lights flying around him. I can remember being a kid and seeing these bugs too. Helps that for being so low key the scene is quite pretty. I caught a firefly to take home as well, of course.

Day 6

Aww, slept through ラジオ体操, I guess from spending time out last night.

Honestly didn’t seem to find much happening at all this day, the uncle was on the lookout for the thieves and the aunt knew that I went out, but besides talking to them I didn’t really do much.

So I got the journal entry for it being a day where nothing happened.

Day 7

Today I learned, from the aunt: Uguisu no fun - Wikipedia

Realized around the end of the last day that I probably should’ve checked out the 秘密基地 again so I went there today, and sure enough I’m a member now! Also I spotted the teacher again and when I asked him about where to get interesting bugs he told me about some secret passage that the local kids can probably teach me about, which I think I’m on the right track to get started here.

This journal entry is fantastic, but also related to the little spoiler tag I put on this day, so I’ll hide it by default just in case:

Oh boy. I finished day4 and day5. Both were monster days with soo much stuff happening.
I had the exact same end picture books as Daisoujou.

One thing I realized, and which I absolutely love is that you can always talk with the mother after dinner, and get a detailed explanation of what food we had for dinner. I love listening to her combinations

If you want to read my long ramblings about what happened in my days, with spoilers, you can read

Day4 (~40mins)

I caught the exact same one on day 4.

The day started with our usual ラジオ体操. I realized mother is the only one not participating in the activity :frowning: . Is she maybe busy preparing the breakfast instead? Shirabe suddenly is talkative, and we learn her nickname from school ちび娘. Totally understandable that she doesn’t like that nickname very much. She takes me on a tour and the both of them are so cute together :heart_exclamation: . She shows me how to get my luck from the 地蔵 and she and I both get a 小吉; could be worse.
While following her, I stop at the hunting sign again since I don’t remember exactly what it says. When I look up from the sign, there is a watermelon thief right at work with the watermelons. So I hide at the hunting sign, but because I’m nervous, my bad habit of hiccups sets in. Shortly before the thief finds me, a 山犬 lets out a big howl and distracts the thief, who then leaves.
I already think I’ve lost Shirabe because of this incident, but I can catch up to her. She tells me it is not proper to let ladies wait, but she’ll forgive me. Lucky day for me. She shows me some flowers which you can drink the sweet nectar out of. One screen further the mother waits on both of us and takes a picture of us together. Apparently she was a “cameraman” before she settled here. Father apparently likes cheese, at least that’s the line to get us smile while taking the picture :cheese:
Since Shirabe left for home, I went to the big fishing lake again and caught another 3 of the same fish. Let’s see when I will find my first new type of fish.
I went to explore again, and on my way met my boy Aniki on the bridge. He has a cool cap. I wanted to follow him when he walks of, but he instantly disappears :frowning: .
When I look into uncles workshop, he asks me if I was on a date with Shirabe, and says he wants to go on dates himself. He then tells me that the boards in the back fell themselves during the night and destroyed some of his pottery… If only he knew :face_with_hand_over_mouth:.
I went back to the house and got かき氷 after dinner. I could choose my flavor and went with melon syrup flavored ice. After I made my rounds talking with each of the members, and Uncle told me that I shouldn’t do as he did and disturb the bees with the fishing rod. The topic came up since the village has no doctor and that’s why the always have ice on hand; the reason we could have shaved ice. I was warned to not get stung by bees. Guess what I’m now planning for the next day :face_with_hand_over_mouth: . Additionally, Uncle also gave me some tips for fishing.
Shirabe just told me she wants to take me even further next time. Moe was only saying that she thinks かき氷 is cool since it has low calories… boring…

I catalogued my bugs and went to bed.

Day5 (~30mins)

Another even more packed day?
At breakfast, I learned that it’s my only chance to see fireflies because uncle is helping some guy with some firefly related matter which I didn’t exactly understand 100%.
I watered the plants as every day, but I still can’t see any change with them for now. I’m interested when we will see them bloom.
Moe’s friend (Yoshiko?) was standing at the bridge and wanted to touch my hair. Weird girl.
I got a 中吉 from the 地蔵 and was really happy about that. You remember my plan from yesterday to go poke the bees? A 中吉 bodes well for a good result there!
The bees absolutely did not like me pocking them with a stick, and went ballistic. Luckily I didn’t get stung by any bee. On the negative side, I couldn’t poke the bees a second time :frowning:
I wanted to go to the second smaller fishing spot which I found on day4 and went through the house garden to get there. I’m starting to get a feel for the layout of things and thought it was the fastest way there. On the way I ran into Shirabe at the house. She told me to go to the 地蔵 to get a 大吉. I told her I feel sorry hitting the 地蔵 and she threatened me with hitting me instead… I already got a 中吉 earlier, that was good enough for me, so I counted on my luck and ignored her “command”.
On the way to the fishing spot I ran into Aniki on the bridge again. So I naturally took my time to talk to him again. He told me it is dangerous to play alone close to the water. And then he asked me if I already made new friends here. Since I count Shirabe as my friend now, I naturally answered with yes. He seemed a little disappointed and told me that he was still alone. I’d be his friend if the game would let me :face_holding_back_tears:
When I arrived at the second fishing spot all the fish were already gone again. I apparently took too much time with all the other stuff in the morning again. I have to plan a day, for which I go fishing first thing in the morning!
So I changed my plans and took another look at the hideout I found on day3? to see if things have changed. My hunch was apparently right, since I ran into a guy named ガッツ sitting there. He looked suspiciously similar to the watermelon thief I encountered the day prior, and indeed,
he was bragging that he’s the one eating the スイカ and said they are 食べ放題. He then asked me if I wanted to eat some. But soon he realized I’m staying at Uncle’s house and promptly made me swear to not rat him out to Uncle. I promised to keep silent, and he wanted to let me into their secret group for it. But when I asked for the secret password, he said he actually forgot it :frowning: . After talking a bit more I got the information that they have cool bug fights here, so I definitely want to come back and compete as soon as I have my own カブトムシ or similar!
I went to the bees again to see if they have calmed down, but apparently they hadn’t yet recovered from my one poke in the morning. They were still buzzing around like crazy. Yoshiko was also still standing on the bridge doing her テイサツ, what a boring day it must be.
As soon as I wanted to enter the house I was instantly at the dinner table. I wanted to actually talk to the mother in the kitchen, since she promised me a guessing game in the morning, but apparently I missed my chance :(. The dad drove of after the dinner, so now is my chance to sneak out to see the fireflies.
Before I went out I had a short talk with Shirabe again, and apparently she knows my new thiefing buddy Gatsu. He’s in the same class as her and is apparently known as a 弱虫. He left a different impression on me in the hideout.
So either way, I left Shirabe to her usual TV watching, and wanted to sneak out of the front door to not alarm Shirabe or Mother (no idea where Moe was again). But the front door was solidly locked. So I clenched my teeth and snuck out through the balcony.
Man it was worth it. Sooo many fireflies. Such lovely Music. I took some time to soak in the atmosphere:

After enjoying the scene for a while, I wanted to return to the house, but got tired on the way back, shortly before actually reaching it. Uncle escorted me to my room. I hope I’m not in too much trouble for sneaking out at night…

Because I was too tired I couldn’t catalogue my bugs and had to go to bed instantly :frowning: .

Holy shit. I tried to write complete sentences this time, and it’s getting into novel length territory soon. Apparently I like to write about my experiences like that. Maybe I should start writing a journal for my own use as well?

Day 4

Started off the day with shirabe wanting to take me somewhere but I wanted to go drop off my bug first. Unfortunately I lost her because of this, no idea where she went

Tried a bit of fishing again and completely failed, I’ll have to check the guide if I’m missing something.

Caught the watermelon thief red handed! Sort of. Didn’t confront him. Wandered around and caught a few more bugs, had lemon shaved ice, bounced on the bed and then called it a day

Day 5

Went and discovered the bee hive, I was trying to see if it’d let me catch a bee in the net but I ended up smacking it with the fishing rod and making the bees angry instead lmao.

Checked the hideout and found the watermelon thief! And he mentioned the beetle fighting.

And finally, managed to catch some fish!! I think I just had the wrong type of bait every time I tried so they weren’t biting. Now what do you do with the fish :folded_hands:

Gah I can’t believe I missed the fireflies, I didn’t catch what he was talking about

Fished day6 and day7. This Time there are big spoilers in my log so be warned. Stuff no one else has found yet. I’ve kept my log shorter this time.

Big spoilers
day6 (27min)
  • Overslept because I went to see fireflies the day before. No radio taisou for me.
  • categorized the bugs from the day before
  • watered plants
  • Learned that mother knows I went to watch fireflies. Also learned that shirabe loves ants
  • Went asap to the second pool where we can fish. Still no fish there. I wonder why we can fish there if there are no fish.
  • Found uncle on the lookout in the melon field
  • Came by the jizo and good 大凶 not a good sign
  • Got to poke the bees again AND it said a few more pokes and it will fall. Poked it automatically two more times and I could PASS THE BEES!!!
  • Found an old unused well
  • Found a 丘 top where boku decided it is a good time to yawn
  • Found many many new bugs I could catch. Some of the nicest looking butterflies so far.
  • Found a third fishing hole with many fish in it. Best fishing spot so far. Found my second type of fish here
  • Found a waterfall. I couldn’t progress here and found nothing to do. Anyone please help what the waterfall is good for?
  • After that I got caught by uncle and brought back for dinner.
  • Apparently uncle was totally tired by having been on melon lookout. No wonder he is tired by that if he couldn’t even help with the corn the other day.
  • Cataloqued my new bugs
  • Got unique end of day picture for the bees
day7 (31min)
  • Did taisou again
  • The taisou miss looks so bad in my scorecard :frowning:
  • Originally planned to go to the new area since I didn’t completely explore the last day but
  • Talked about my mountain find during breakfast and uncle proposed building a kite. I have to tell him which one from a book
  • While looking for the kite book found another book about butterflies but was too much text for me today. Will read another day
  • The kites are ordered by difficulty, could only request the easiest one for now

  • Selected the easy kite and went to uncles shed to order it. He said he needs 2 days to build the kite. I hope harder kites are available after I have the first one. There are nice designs in there.
  • Got another jizo charm: 中吉
  • Wanted to explore new area and ran into MOE!
  • Moe decided to share her life plans with me
  • I got to pick some flowers for moe which she wants to give as 押し花 to the friend who teaches her clarinet
  • Went to fish a second time in the third pond.
  • Uncle caught me for dinner again :frowning:
  • Didn’t understand completely, but the dinner discussion was about some danger with the well and that I shouldn’t play dangerously and be careful.
  • Uncle asked after dinner if I’m used to the house and tells me that the house is apparently a 移築 from 金沢? from the 明治 era. Interesting information. I thought Japanese simply rebuild their houses every few years. But they also moved them o_O. Nice
  • Shirabe likes fish in addition to ants and wants to have a fish tank in her future.
  • End picture was a day with nothing happening even though LOTS of things happend :frowning:

Favorite caught bug so far. I like the different color of the undewings and that it is so vibrant:

My overall caught bugs: 43
Types of fish: 2
Time Played: 3:39

I’m really impressed how quickly you’re finding these things. I think doing part of this week sick and mentally slowed down didn’t do me any favors, haha. I’ve got a lot to get doing!

Day 4

Did not expect to be approached by the cousin to go explore! We mostly saw places I had already been, but I guess it was … Fun? Also met a teenager boy halfway across the river, fished a lot, and discovered that you can cross the river on the broken bridge by jumping around. Found another cool looking place to fish, but the point of view there makes it impossible to see where the fishes are. I think I did a whole wide run around the area and I think I ended up back at the house when uncle found me.
I explored a whole lot and caught a lot of butterflies! I’m up to 21 bugs found.

Day 5

Mostly went around, caught a dragonfly and met the sensei again! This time I asked him how to get rid of the beehive, really curious to go explore more there…
When night came, uncle rode away and I realized it was a chance to go see the fireflies! I had actually no idea if the game would let you do it, so I tried to sneak out and went to the river… let’s say it was a really nice scene. The music suddenly starting as all the fireflies fly around, it caught me so by surprise it made me almost tear up.
I couldn’t help but think back on all the times I would see hundreds of fireflies around the house as a kid and catch a couple in a colored plastic cup to see the light shine through.
Been years since I last saw them around.
It felt a bit magical, and I like that the game simply let’s you try and see if you could do it. My favourite day for now!!

Day 6

No 体操 this morning, aw : (
I watered the flowers and immediately went to poke the beehive. To my surprise, it dropped immediately! So I spent the rest of the day exploring the path after that. I caught a lot of bugs and found another couple of fishing spots, didn’t meet a single person all day lol

Bees

I wonder what decides how many pokes it takes to drop the beehive?
Reading other people accounts they had to poke it multiple times, me I went there (after getting the hint from the teacher) and it fell off immediately on Day 6 as soon as I poked it

Weekend was busier than I thought, so I played day 6 & 7 a little late!!

Day 4

I went on the little tour with Shirabe

I also tried fishing in the area with the waterfall, but didn’t catch any fish
I also went to the pottery shed and talks to the uncle, bro said 「誰かとデートしたいなぁ」, with your wife :face_with_raised_eyebrow: right sir??
I chose melon syrup for the shaved ice!!

Logged my bugs and went to bed

「日向ぼっこするのが好き」だって!:face_holding_back_tears:

Day 5

I went fishing same spot as yesterday

Then I realized I forgot to water the flowers so I went to go back home, and on the way encountered the melon thief!!
I like how the TV is different everyday when you watch!! Yesterday was nature underwater, and today was a comedy show

I OF COURSE went out to go see the fireflies. The sound of the frogs was so cool!
And the music that played when you find the fireflies was so cool!! It definitely made it more magical :head_shaking_vertically:

I love fireflies!! I’ve had a few friends tell me they’ve never seen them before! We have them every summer where I live

Day 6

Ah! Shirabe came and woke me up and I missed 体操
The aunt knows I went to see the fireflies!! But she’s so chill haha, and caught me another one!
I’m hoping you’ll eventually get to do something with the chickens and cow, I always pet them!
I went to the secret hideout and found ガッツ!! (I also went AHH it’s Conan’s voice actress!!) His cool voice makes Boku’s sound even cuter hehe
I caught more fish but no new types
I saw the uncle standing in the melon patch, but I didn’t want to talk to him because I was worried Boku would lie about the watermelon thief lol
Poked the bee hive again, but I still don’t know how to get it down!!
The tv had multiple different news items today

Day 7

かわいい〜:sob:

Since I wasn’t out late the night before, I’m back to waking up with the roosters and doing 体操!
I turned the tv on in the morning, and there was some samurai drama on
I caught a ニジマス fish by the waterfall, and it was either new or very big, because Boku jumped in joy haha
I went back to the secret hideout again today, and there were two more boys with ガッツ! (Ah, メガネ is Pikachu’s voice actress!)
AYOOO ファット LIKES MOE, hehe that’s cute. And メガネ is in the same class as Shirabe!
Ah and I found the bug battle area! But I don’t have any beetles yet
I wanted to poke the bees, but decided to try getting 大吉 first. I dont think it’s random, I think there’s a pattern with which of the three jizo you hit! So after some trial and error I got 大吉

I poked the beehive again, but it still hasn’t dropped. Maybe I just have to keep doing it over multiple days?
I wanted to tell Sirabe I got 大吉, but the uncle got me before I could
At dinner they said kid(s) have been playing in a well. They keep telling me not to do all these things, and never warn their kids as well! They’re just giving these kids ideas :joy:

I noticed some bugs in my log have a crown, but I don’t know what that means??

The Fridge

When you open the fridge and can choose a drink, I thought “I wonder if the fridge contents change??” And sure enough!! They change slightly every day. I think that’s a really neat detail!! This game just has so much charm packed into even the small stuff hehe

Responses to Others Week 2

I could be remembering wrong, but I think I encountered him even without reading the sign!

Haha, interesting. I never broke any of the pottery, because the first few times I went into the shed the uncle was there. And when I clicked on the shelf he mentioned that it was dangerous, and was still unstable even though he tried to fix it many times. So it makes sense why he assumed it just fell apart!

Hmm, I believe ガッツ is a 5th grader and Shirabe is a 3rd grader? The other boy in the group メガネ I know is in her class, and 弱虫 seems to fit him better haha

Yeah! I wonder if each game file has a random number of times you have to hit it?

Also, since I am a few days behind the next week, sorry if I said or repeated things you all did in the next weeks thread!

I’ve been wondering, but haven’t tried, to see if you could use the fridge contents to win the dinner guessing game more consistently. With this discovery, there’s a chance that’s real!

I also really appreciate the TV updates cause I haven’t been paying close attention to that at all! I wonder how many little details I’m missing.

Ah! And I haven’t even encountered that yet!! That would be cool if it is linked to the fridge

Yeah I also realized the fridge content changes since I pretty regularly drink some milk before bed for better sleep.

Day 7

I triggered the encounter with the watermelon thief but after he ran off I couldn’t meet him anymore, so I spent a bit of time just running around trying to see if someone was around. I met sensei and the girl in the orange dress again, this time I told the teacher about the thief. I wonder if he’s supposed to just give you hints or actually triggers some events…
For once I managed to get back home before dinner so I tried to answer aunt’s quiz but got it wrong, I’ll try checking the fridge in the morning!
At dinner uncle mentioned a well and aunt asked me to never play in such a dangerous place, so of course that’s what I’m going to do, but I have no idea where it is…
I found only one new bug today… I thought it would be logged as a uneventful day but apparently the mention of baumkuchen struck Boku’s imagination ahah
