Luckily I largely had my post typed up already as I played so I could keep the days separate correctly. Gonna go on and post while I’m having an ok period cause who knows what the next days will look like for me now
Week 2 spoilers
Day 4
This is easily my favorite day so far, now that Shirabe decided she wants to hang out with us she’s so cute and funny. I got 小吉 luck from the jizo statues with her, not sure if the first time is totally random or not. Her little manic tour was really fun and the aunt wanting to take a photo of us is so real. Though Boku is such a nice, agreeable kid; I’m surprised as a little kid he didn’t complain about taking the photo at all. I guess when it’s not your immediate family it might be different, too.
During the Shirabe trip I stopped to look at the hunting sign again and that seemed to trigger the appearance of a watermelon thief, I think? Boku hid and didn’t actually talk to the boy, who left after hearing wolf sounds just when he was about to find us . Otherwise this day was mostly about Shirabe, though I did meet this new guy. Not sure what his deal is, he left to say he wanted to go look at something but I couldn’t find him afterwards.
My main goal at this point is to become better friends with Shirabe.
Day 5
On the other hand, this was the first day I felt pretty directionless, at least during the day. Some of the explanation about what the uncle is up to with the fireflies flew past me worse than most lines but I caught adult Boku’s comment about this being his one chance to see them. I quite like the inclusions that make it clear he’s reminiscing on a past holiday. Certainly this game is appropriate for kids, but it feels to me like the main appeal of it is for those of us who aren’t children anymore to experience some simulation of the childlike wonder we used to have, so it puts us on the same level as him, thinking back.
I’ve remembered to water the plants still every day, happy about that one. Boku’s aunt told me I could play a dinner guessing game if I came back in the evening, so I made a note of that and started wandering. Spotted the uncle in his pottery shed and had a little chat. Continuing from what I did before in the shed, I had to examine the shelf I broke again to get him to comment that it must have not been stable enough, so that explains why I’m not being scolded. He doesn’t actually know I did it.
Spotted Moe’s friend again who is up to some 偵察 on the bridge but didn’t have much else to tell me. Shirabe told me to spam the jizo statues until I got the best luck so I did that, haha. Kind of feels like she’s just being goofy and it doesn’t do anything but, after cheating and retrying a bunch, I got the very lucky fortune.
Otherwise I mostly wandered! Spotted the bridge kid again who just wanted to ask if I had made any friends and acted like he was a sad loner. Found a little dead end river where you can also fish which was down a split I didn’t travel down before
And I got this very cool big butterfly! My favorite bug so far.
But in the end nothing big was happening and I actually intentionally passed time a little after I got back home to play the dinner guessing game. Which is… really just picking one of the options randomly I think. I was wrong
Night time is the main event though! Of course I went out and found the fireflies, which means Boku does tell lies sometimes! I made him a liar, anyway. Finding them was so cool, it’s like what I said about the childlike wonder. In the end, nothing really happens. You walk out far enough and then there are some fireflies. But the way the music dramatically starts up helps sell that this is some magical, impactful occasion. To Boku this is really cool and a big deal, all the lights flying around him. I can remember being a kid and seeing these bugs too. Helps that for being so low key the scene is quite pretty. I caught a firefly to take home as well, of course.
Day 6
Aww, slept through ラジオ体操, I guess from spending time out last night.
Honestly didn’t seem to find much happening at all this day, the uncle was on the lookout for the thieves and the aunt knew that I went out, but besides talking to them I didn’t really do much.
So I got the journal entry for it being a day where nothing happened.
Day 7
Today I learned, from the aunt: Uguisu no fun - Wikipedia
Realized around the end of the last day that I probably should’ve checked out the 秘密基地 again so I went there today, and sure enough I’m a member now! Also I spotted the teacher again and when I asked him about where to get interesting bugs he told me about some secret passage that the local kids can probably teach me about, which I think I’m on the right track to get started here.
This journal entry is fantastic, but also related to the little spoiler tag I put on this day, so I’ll hide it by default just in case:
