Game Systems / Tips

  • Saving happens at the end of each day when you write in your diary.
  • Remember that starting on day 2 you can pull out your bug net at any time (right trigger on PSP)!
  • Registering the bugs (creating a 標本) can be unintuitive at first – First, this must be done in Boku’s room at the desk (it’s a good thing to do before bed!). Select the bug in your box, select 出す, pull it down and place it on the screen below. Then you use the needle, into the pink liquid, and finally into the bug. This removes it from the box, registers this specimen permanently, and gives you a little description.
  • Try to interact with anything that looks interesting. There is a lot of flavor text and even many paths where Boku can hop to places that require pressing interact on them.
  • I have heard time passes when you transition between screens, so you don’t need to feel rushed within a location. When the day ends, Boku’s uncle will find you and take you home.

The Dreaded FMV

The game begins with a cutscene that is raw listening, no stops and no subtitles. This shouldn’t be a regular thing to have to worry about. Sadly, Boku’s narration is a little poetic and not the easiest thing to follow. Luckily, because I care about you all, I have found Youtube videos, one with Japanese subtitles added and one with an English translation: JP subs | English

Game Manual

In this post TheNerdyNova helpfully provided us with images of the game’s manual which include a map, tips for bugs and fishing, advice for progressing certain quests, cute art, and more!

Boku no Spoilers (Please read)

It’s customary in these clubs to collapse or otherwise hide your in-depth explanations of what happened for the week. I would just like to also request that because this game features so much optional and non-linear content, that you use your best judgment for what might be worth hiding, and do your best to make it generally clear outside the tags what you’re discussing. For example, in my week 1 post I referenced locations (the hideout and the shed) where I think interesting things happened but I further spoiler tagged discussion of what happened within them in case anyone who hadn’t visited one yet wanted to save the surprise.

Set this thread to “Watching” to get updates!

We’re doing this! I had a really great time playing already; I love the way the music is used sparingly and it just creates this laid back quiet atmosphere. So many environments are gorgeous and just freely running around looking for things to do is relaxing and pleasant. 癒し系. I think I’m gonna absolutely adore this game.

The language has been fine enough for me too; I’m trying to let it play out and keep up at spoken speed. I’m not quite as 100% solid as I was hoping to be but for the vast majority I’m on top of it. Hope it goes well for the rest of you! Honestly the toughest bits are the ways Boku’s uncle can rattle off directions to something really quickly after breakfast, and when people talk about food because the names of various foods are definitely a domain I have less experience with as someone not actually living in Japan.

I typed up a log of everything I did already as I was preplaying but I’ll come back to post that later after giving this a little more room to breathe. I hope you all have fun :slightly_smiling_face:

Can you speak on how long you took to complete up until day3? I think you said roughly 25 minutes per day, was that accurate?
It might help me to plan how much time I have to set aside if I take your time and roughly multiply by 1.5

I think that time will serve to be about right! I wish I could tell you the in game time but I left the psp on and plugged it in after day 2 while I was taking notes on what I had done, adding things to the home post and looking up those FMV videos and whatnot, so I’m pretty sure it was counting that whole time (thus it says almost 2 hours). I want to say I may have spent close to an hour and a half actively playing but I was being about as thorough and slow as I could, combing over every bit of the stuff I noticed in the places I went. There’s a small learning curve to even navigating bits of the house (or at least I couldn’t seem to get the proper location of the stairs in my head at first ) so as we learn the layouts a lot of that will speed up, haha.

Just wrapped up day 3 with about 1:25 of playtime - that was with a bit of time spent trying (and failing) to fish, and running around after bugs. So an hour and a half sounds like a good estimate, though I wasn’t doing too many lookups that would’ve slowed me down and was keeping up at spoken speeds for the most part (odd thing I did pause to look something up)

The intro FMV was tricky, but mainly because it was hard to even make out what the narrator was saying. It felt very quiet in the mix, which didn’t help at all. Will watch with the subtitles, but didn’t feel like I was particularly missing out in terms of context

Stuff what I noticed

I appreciated the nods to Ultraman and Kamen Rider in ボク’s room

I have to say I was wondering where もえ was most of the time - I think I only actually saw her at mealtimes and on the evening of day 3. ボク was a bit mean calling her clarinet playing bad, sounded nice enough to me. But yeah, is she shut away in her room most of the time?

I remember when I played the first couple of days last time I couldn’t figure out how to water the plants. Fortunately I did this time, and have been watering them properly so far.

Yeah, what is up with that. I immediately went to hunt for audio options to turn the speakers volume higher. It was nearly inaudible to me with all the background noises. The linked YouTube video is also not 100% clear, but it is leagues better than the one in the PSP version. At least after the FMV, my sound levels are much more reasonable to actually understand the people.

I only played the short day 1 for now and have the following points so far:

  1. The character designs are certainly unique. Great work 上田三根子
  2. The controls are definitely a choice. I have to get used to them.
  3. The voice acting so far seems great. I don’t think I will stop and look up any words, and mainly vibe with the game instead to not ruin the mood.
  1. I’m so not used to the way this game handles time. I think half the time I just aimlessly wandered around and soaked in the surroundings instead of trying to interact with too many things. Maybe I need to adjust how I play the game later on? I didn’t even get to explore all the rooms in the house before my time ran out :frowning:
  2. It’s a little strange that there are no interactions markers, you just have to try. If you are a little too far away you might miss an interaction without realizing. I hope I don’t get stuck. Otherwise, I might have to ask for help here.

My favorite interactions so far were the father telling the wife to get him a beer and her refusing with “自分のことを自分でやりましょうね” or something similar. And the interaction with しらべ asking her what she likes to watch, and she is just casually saying “things that look like girls would like them”.
Both brought me a slight giggle.

Let's talk about my first days

Day 1

The starting day will presumably look much the same for all of us. We get to meet the family and briefly explore the house before having a little dinner. I mostly spent my time wandering outside to see the surrounding yard. There are lots of little bonuses you can interact with all across the house; I made sure to try the 麦茶 from the fridge when it was suggested to me. Also my wife and I have been watching Better Call Saul for the first time recently (nearly finished) and that constant bell just makes me feel like Hector is around, which is a very different feeling than the intent no doubt hahaha.

This sort of shot is especially what I have in mind for why I love these fixed angles so much, it’s an inspired choice to put Shirabe right in front of the camera here. Very cute.

Day 2

If you’d like to water the flowers, you can kick a thing next to the house to turn it on! I’ll do my best to remember to do it daily; our aunt promises a present in return! On the other hand, Shirabe does not want me around, oof. The good news is I caught so many bugs the box was getting overfilled. I don’t really understand the use of the second box yet now that one is full but it let me know I needed to send a few there. I spent most of the day taking a long loop through the countryside past Shirabe that eventually lead back to returning home from another entrance.

Along the way I found this guy totally dedicated to bird watching, and also the secret hangout of some kids (probably) where they have been stealing and eating watermelons. Interesting how Boku decides it’s best not to talk about it, but it ultimately feels like a harmless kids being kids thing since his uncle follows up with talking about how he used to take things, too. I wonder if you get the watermelon conversation if you didn’t find the hideout? There was a spot that looked perfect for fishing on the way and one dead end with water I can’t cross, Boku wants to cut down the tree but I’m not yet sure how to do that and it sounds very dangerous for him haha.

It’s so pretty out here; there were several screens I was marveling at.

Day 3

Boku my sweet boy it’s a trap! You gotta stop telling them you like things! I figured out how to register the bugs properly so I did that today, remembered to water the flowers, then I went looking for the fishing rod. Along the way I found the pottery shed. I didn’t mean to break the pottery I’m sorry! I genuinely felt that heart sinking feeling, being a kid and messing up even though you entirely had no bad intentions. I’m waiting to get scolded for that but no one has mentioned it just yet. I really wanted to confess and kept trying to talk to Boku’s uncle but no such luck.

Eventually I found the proper place, went out and bumped into Moe’s… friend? 恋敵 apparently. @VikingSchism I was thinking the same about never finding Moe but she is there briefly when you arrive, I guess you didn’t bump into her like I did. It could be possible this girl is a PSP addition; I dunno who the 3 new NPCs the internet says were added are so I’m keeping record of everyone I find to see if we spot differences. Anyway, it’s funny that they’re doing the who’s on first type joke with the name Boku. Helped pick the corn and they praised me for keeping my promise (even though they just one-sidedly put this on me!) and ran over to try to fish.

Along the way I found a local teacher (looks like the bird watcher, just more interested in talking now) who told me I could ask anything and I had to ask why Moe won’t let me into her room because it’s the funniest thing to expect him to answer that, but he still did his best, to his credit. Anyway yesterday the pond was FULL of like dozens of fish and today there was literally 1. I spent a while going for it but finally got it to bite and caught my first fish.

At this point I have 19 bugs registered already, but remember that there are more bugs on the PSP version. Right now I’m curious about the path to the left of the Jizo statues, I briefly peeked over there and saw a beehive, but at the time I was trying to go to the fishing hole so I turned around and left. I wonder if the bees prevent exploration in that direction or have any associated event. Will investigate next week.

I was going to share my diary entries but they’re identical to what VikingSchism had, so that’s easy!

I definitely do agree that the mix had the voices a little low, but I was using headphones with my PSP which I think ultimately made it way better than it would’ve been with speakers.

@downtimes As I recall day 1 is just very short, when they gave me that period to look around I personally wandered outside straight away but I don’t think I saw more than a couple screens before it was time to eat. Luckily I could look around the house a little more after. With day 2 and 3 being proper full days now that you’ve arrived they felt like the time I had was more workable. So far I’ve felt like most interactables were more or less intuitive (unless I’m missing some and don’t know!) but I do probably need to keep in mind that I likely have more experience than most people with tank controls and exploring these types of environments. I definitely do recommend looking out for anything that looks like it might be something and erring on the side of testing lots of things.

Comparing notes

I got in there on day 2 and found the uncle working in there. There was a fun little interaction with him telling ボク to keep away from the broken pottery because it’s dangerous

It looks like you met a lot more NPCs than I did! I didn’t come across the kids, the teacher, or anything other than the family around the house

I spent a good while trying to fish but nothing was biting so I gave up in the end. Might have to go back and try again on a future day

Differences

Love that we’re seeing some differences already, especially since you made it in the shed when someone was there vs me finding it empty. Its location was a little awkward for me to notice until I was searching around for the fishing rod.

I chalked it up there only being one specific fish especially but I did have to keep trying and recasting the line quite a while to get its attention. Not clear at the moment what, if anything, we’ll get for having caught fish. Maybe an event later needs it?

Day 1

My day involved roaming around the house getting lost cause the house plan isn’t stuck in my head yet. Optional activities were taking a bath and I think the toilet lmao.

I went up and downstairs about 5 times before I realised there was another part to the bedroom if you walked over a bit and that’s how you found the notebook on the desk!

I find the diary entries very charming, I was expecting something more like Pokémon but this is very cute

Day 2

According to my diary I did absolutely nothing today lmao. I went exploring and found some possible things to look into:

  • uncle wants watermelon?
  • aunt said something about flowers (can you collect them?) reading daisoujou’s log seems it was about watering, I forgot how to make aunt stop auto talking so I could read properly lolol
  • Do you need to find a key to the older cousin’s room?
  • Reached a broken bridge and Boku had the genius idea of a small child trying to cut down the nearby tree to get across
  • I want that bug net, I clicked at it but it just shows me it then I leave - am I missing something?

Cupped some water in the river and found the kids’ hideout under the bridge. Also visited uncle in his pottery workshop, very cool.

I’m tempted to check the walkthrough to see what I could be missing but I think it’ll be more fun if I just experience the summer how I feel like

Also I’m playing this at work so I’m trying to look busy lmao

If you’re playing on the PS1 version the way to get the bug net out is a little inconvenient but I think you should just be able to do it at any time from day 2 onwards

You have to open the menu with square or triangle, then select ほちゅうあみ (I don’t remember if it was kanji or not but the kanji is 捕虫網). Then you will be holding the net and can use circle to swing it - the first swing is a vertical swipe, while the second is a horizontal swipe, then it continues to alternate each time you press the button

Finished day2.

  • First thing I did was empty my insect basket and catalogue them with Daisoujous tip
  • Successfully watered the plants, as can be seen by diary entry.
  • Caught many insects. But mostly butterflies.
  • Tried to talk with 詩 but she doesn’t seem to like me much
  • Then put on my shoes and went out to explore
  • Found a sign warning about hunting, scary
  • Got lost, found the pottery shed and did the same mistake Daisoujou did
  • Just as I came out of the shed uncle came to get me, didn’t say a thing about me destroying his stuff…
  • Drank some milk and tea, took a bath and that was basically the day

Seems to me like that’s the case. We were talking about watermelon thiefs after dinner even though I didn’t encounter what you wrote.

At least on day 2 I tried to get past them but couldn’t :person_shrugging:

Funny interactions today: I was greeted by radio taisou which I found kinda funny. And shirabe in front of the TV in the evening always cracks me up with her answers, even if she tells me afterwards to leave her alone

My day still felt way too short. I couldn’t really explore as much as I wanted. I don’t feel like I have any idea about the surroundings yet. It seems to me like you guys got much more done than me in the time you had. At least I seem to have another unique diary entry unlocked because of it

Day 3
  • Uncle mentioned fishing and once again I didn’t catch everything he said lmao but I assume he was mentioning a fishing rod somewhere.
  • Uncle mentioned helping out in the cornfield?
  • Found the fishing pole! Rejoice!
  • Watered the flowers!
  • Helped aunt and uncle with the corn field, and by that I mean I did all the work and they stood there watching!!I wonder if that will go anywhere
  • Caught some butterflies and a dragon fly!
  • Tried to do fishing but the fish wouldn’t bite :frowning:
  • At dinner we discussed fireflies by the train station or something but uncle won’t let me go at night
  • I love big cousin playing clarinet on the porch
  • Forgot to put my bugs in the room thing before uncle told me to go to bed

Forgot to take a pic of my diary page but its the catching bugs one (kinda hoped it would be about the corn but oh well)

FIshing seems to be giving most people trouble. I did need to try quite a few times like I said, chalked that up to it being hard with one fish only around when I did it but I wonder if there’s more to it to work out. I think I saw options related to the kind of bait you use? Only noticed it after catching mine, but maybe there’s something we could do to make it easier? If I get back to fishing again I’ll keep an eye out for it, but also if anyone else goes fishing please do share anything you learn.

I got my copy, but am having a little difficulty getting it to work. It should be ready soon though, I can’t wait to start!

My PS1 version came with the manual, which normally I don’t care too much about one way or the other. But the manual for this game is so cute and (hopefully) helpful!! It seems there are maps, schedules, instructions on things like fishing, and an illustrated insect guide!!

In case anyone else is curious to see the manual, or wants to use it as a reference, here are photos of my copy! :down_arrow:

Done with Day3. Same diary entry as @VikingSchism.

My day looked like the following:

  • Watered the plants
  • Got the fishing gear from the “garage?”
  • Went out to help the family with getting their corn. Apparently I’m responsible for everything and the parents didn’t do a thing except for standing in the way
  • On the way ran into moe and her friend “atashi XD”
  • Then went straight to the pond to go for fishing since the dad said there are plenty fish in the mornings
  • Got sidetracked and found the hideout of the bad children with proof that they ate some Watermelon.
  • When I arrived at the lake it was later than anticipated, only 2 fish left. But I caught both of them. Experimented with some different bait but couldn’t make out exactly what attracts the fish.
  • Went to the “I can chop down that tree” bridge.
  • Wanted to explore some more but the day was over again, uncle got me :frowning:
  • Uncle talking about fireflys which I definitely want to see.
  • Moe playing a nice melody.
  • I finish up by taking a bath, speaking with all family members and cataloguing my 4 or so caught bugs.

I so had the same reaction. So useless these adults… As far as I understood from the text in the morning, it was a one time thing. But it will be interesting to see if it connects to something. The mother said she will cook with them. But maybe that will happen wether you helped or not.

Total bugs catalogued: 18
Fish caught: 2 (same type :frowning: )
Realized we have a bag that holds stuff in which I have a ラジオ体操カード with 2 stamps already, mega proud.
Total playtime according to the save file: 1:31

Done for this week.
