Last time, I had the volume in my hands on June 20th, though I probably didn’t go buy it the very first day it came out. (Likely I bought it that day because I was going to the city anyway.) So probably the 20th or 27th would work. Assuming nothing’s slowing down Kinokuniya’s shipment service.

Hi, I’m French and new to the reading club. Can anybody advise me on the better way to get this book’s volume? I can order book in Junku bookshop in Paris and I have an old kobo reader tablet.

Both sound like good options. Assume you realise this is volume 15 of a series of manga?

Buying digital will be cheaper than physical but ordering from Junku may be easier. And depends if you want a nice physical copy to have on your bookshelf.

I’m not familiar with buying Japanese stuff on Kobo and downloading it though. May be some technical stuff to figure out and buying from the Japanese store.

Personally I buy my manga on Book Walker and read on a tablet. https://bookwalker.jp/ded2aab3e9-6d53-42ef-9426-2b66f5a33fbc/

Thanks for your answer. I realize this is volume 15 but I’m willing to start reading a book in the club, so I’ll start with any new reading session  .
I’m waiting for my bookshop answer and decide then. The merchant is off for few days so I’ll have to wait a bit.

If you just want to read with an active club, Absolute Beginners Book Club will start an extremely popular series Yotsubato in July here:

Or Beginner Book Club just started Yomi no Tsugai (also stong pick, imo!) here:

I think some things could be confusing (or not so funny!) if you’ll start reading from vol. 15. You’re always welcome to ask questions of course if you’d like to!

starting to binge read from chapter one knowing full well that I won’t make it on time to read with the club

Next time

Chapter 86

Fun first chapter. Loved all the rural shinto ceremonies. Probably missed loads of cultural references that went over my head. I liked the little flying creatures that appeared behind them in the procession, especially the part where they squeezed in the back of the car for a lift. Poor cameraman couldn’t catch a break though!

Chapter 86

Fun how the Mountain God’s first action is to start taking pictures instead of doing some sort of blessing or something

I thought that was fun too. At least it had the decency to use a retro looking camera, and not just take pictures on its smartphone…

I’mma leave these here:

Ch. 87

The Dragon Ball puns

Niga~!

The horror

The chapter starts in Narita Senzo Coffee Shop (Bland Name’d with an obvious Narita/Haneda pun). Here’s the first panel, complete with tree covering up part of the sign board. (Is that supposed to be a coffee bean on the post in front?) That’s a Turkish coffee set in the final panel of page 35 - I assume there’s one in the real cafe too, but I can’t find a photo on Google Maps which shows it.

Page 39 final panel, バリ神山 coffee is real, grown on Mount Kintamani in Bali, though I’m getting… imprecise information as to what it’s actually called in English. Many sites just say “Bali Shinzan”, but surely that’s the Japanese name (though I do notice it’s written in all-caps romaji on the containers on page 42 when all the rest are in either kana or kanji). Page 40 fourth panel, Cerrado is also a real brand of coffee, from Brazil.

Well, that got thoroughly out of hand. Makoto’s apparently giving up the witch business and getting into coffee instead. From now on, this series shall be called Flying Barista.

So, Kei has his teacher’s mobile number and just… messages him? Casually?

I feel letting a weird magical mandrake hybrid of mysterious origin drink coffee may not perhaps be the wisest of ideas

Chapter 87

He’s such a fan of Mt Iwate he’s copied it with his hairstyle

If you forgot who Akatsuki is:

Japanese has some awesome words

I really hope that’s where the next chapter goes!

Chapter 88

I know things have a way of coming up roses for Makoto at all times, but the speed at which she’s gone from learning about good coffee for the very first time to opening up her own “cafe” in school to licencing a second branch in the same building to travelling the length of Hokkaido specifically to help at someone else’s cafe is rather dizzying. Like, how on earth did we get to this point? (Plus, she’s got a friend who’s had experience helping out in a cafe practically since birth, surely she’d be a better choice. Or pretty much anyone else already in Hokkaido.)

I’m glad they remember the Great Sabbath is coming up, though.

The samurai seem to be drawn in radically different styles - are they meant to be caricatures of some other artists’ work?

Chapter 88

This has all taken on a very Shirokuma Cafe vibe! That manga had long sections dedicated to detailed explanations of the creation of good coffee (created and drunk by talking animals).

After all the build up last volume I was ready for a volume focussed on the Great Sabbath - but in good Flying Witch style we are bouncing around through a variety of standalone slice of life chapters.

Love how they flew by airplane (even though they are flying witches) and then once they arrived magically teleported the rest of the way!

I thought the same. The first three to me had quite an old fashioned comic art style, which I assumed reflected their status as characters from 200 years ago.

Ch. 88

I also vividly remembered Shirokuma cafe!
Also on p. 75:

At first I wasn’t sure if I remembered right, but 5 volumes of ウスズミの果…

Also, they don’t even prepare coffee, they just serve the tables!
