Is it weird that I feel frustrated that noone besides Fuchuya ever finds out about his little escapade? 😛 Mikan sees it on the news, but doesn’t know Fuchuya well enough to recongise him, and because she never mentioned _where_ the train was, Asumi, Kei and Marika don’t pick up on it either. And Fuchuya doesn’t tell them himself. ---

Yeah, me too. I was ready to see the girls shocked reactions when they heard the news…and then it never came! The voice - I thought at first it was Lion, but by the end I was more thinking it was his own voice, the inner voice from all his training kicking in. Short chapter! We squeeze 7 in this volume. もっと強くていい。肋骨の2、3本は覚悟してもらえ。Page 9. I didn’t get the second sentence. I looked it up and the suggestion was that it means: ”be prepared to break 2 or 3 ribs”. The word “break” is not stated, but implied through the sense of the verb - 覚悟する meaning _to be prepared for / resign oneself to / brace oneself for something unpleasant_. Plus the context of the first sentence telling him to push harder. ---

Not much to say this week - it’s an unusually short chapter, the shortest we’ve had in a while. Maybe even the shortest of the whole series, though I’d have to check. I did start thinking during my reading that it might have been nice if Kei had been living at the dorm for the whole series. Unlike the other four kids, we know almost nothing about Kei’s family - I think we saw her home once, several volumes ago when she was sick with a cold, but other than that it never comes up. ---

It’s a New Year’s special to follow the Christmas special. Page 46, if 全くダメな年になる only rates a 凶, I’d hate to see what kind of year you’d have if you got a 大凶. Page 50, Karaoke!Kei is singing 僕のオネスティ by 川上進一郎, same as she did back in volume 10. Despite the protagonists love of stars, I don’t feel like we often see recognisable constellations in the artwork. So the view of orion on page 51 seemed a bit of an exception, although I was expecting we were going to see the full constellation when they got to the roof, instead we got a sky full of stars where I didn’t recognise any constellations. Proper cliffhanger! Like a reality TV show cutting to commercial just before announcing who is going home! ---

Did anyone really see this ending any other way? Bit harsh they’re only taking one student, though. I figured the rest of Team Asumi had already removed themselves from consideration by various means, but what about the rest of the class? Asumi’s now on the fast track to becoming a crew member, but why not train the potential crew of future missions at the same time? But yeah, I’m with both Kei and Asumi on this one - this whole situation does, weirdly, kinda hurt. Bottom of page 92, Classmate A offers his right hand to Asumi, but at the top of 93, it’s now his left hand that he’s got extended. ---

Yeah there was no way Asumi wasn’t selected. She’s seemed to excel all the way through, as well as being the central character. I guess the big twist was that only one got through, I thought Fuchuuya might get through and be left with some conflict what to do next. I wonder how the story will play out from here with only 1.5 volumes to go? I’d really like to see Asumi get into space, perhaps we can have some time skips to get us there. Also, I enjoyed the banzai scene! ---

Oni-sensei told them last week to wait in the same room, and Shiomi-sensei would come and explain things to them. They were sitting on stand-alone chairs in an otherwise empty room. This chapter, we have a flashback to Shiomi-sensei explaining things to them, but now they’re in lecture-room seating, with benches and desks. Either way, this whole process of “surprise! none of you are continuing in this course. Unfortunately, the transfer cut-off for everything else was last week, soooo… too bad!” feels less than awesome. Is this chapter wrapping up Kei’s and Marika’s story arcs? ---

It’s the end of an era… Page 142 first panel, Yaginuma-sensei is being sneaky here by splitting the names in half and giving them different kanji, but the two students transferring to engineering continue the trend of naming bit-part characters after Chuo Line stations - specifically, [飯田橋](https://maps.app.goo.gl/VyzHHZumfjQHeaXz7) and (once again) [吉祥寺](https://maps.app.goo.gl/V5e4XbkU82J1b9JK7). Page 151, he’s just standing in the dark. That’s all. Nothing to worry about. Page 161, what’s Kei doing with her fingers in the first panel? They’re emitting motion lines, or sound lines, or something, but I’m not clear on what that gesture is supposed to mean. ---

It really feels like this manga is wrapping up this volume, it will be interesting to see where it goes for the next volume. I’m still hoping for a time skip and see an epilogue with their future careers. I’m expecting some serious emotion next week at the graduation ceremony!!
