So without spoilers, how did everyone like the manga? I didn’t join since I was busy with other stuff (and other reasons I mentioned before), but I’m still curious.
Disliked one character but liked the rest and the story a lot. Definitely continuing as the volume 1 feels like it’s barely starting.
Also was way easier than anticipated, more like Natively level 22, could have been a BBC pick
Couple scenes were difficult to get through (triggering reasons not language), but other than that
My expectations were really low for this one, but… I’m enjoying it more than I expected! Definitely looking forward to reading the other volumes!
Well, since we’re discussing our impressions, it’s probably time we discussed the offshoot. For those who want to do it as a group, I’ve had a couple of ideas as to how we might schedule with a mind towards the fact that it’s ninety-nine chapters (or chapter-like stories) long:
- Regular schedule: I create a thread per volume, then write a post each week to mark the ticking over of chapters. Or two chapters, we can discuss that later.
- Loose schedule: I create a thread per volume once a month or thereabouts, and we just discuss chapters as we get to them,
- No schedule: I post a single thread to cover the whole series, and people just post whenever they get around to it.
Preferences?
- I’m not continuing
- I’ll just continue at my own pace
- Offshoot with regular schedule
- Offshoot with loose schedule
- Offshoot with no schedule
- Other (please comment)
I kinda like 3.5/5 or 4/5 depending on aspects, but there are indeed some triggering, frustrating, scenes.
It could be a fun and worthy read, nonetheless. It’s engaging enough.
I know personally I’m much better with a regular schedule. Though perhaps would manage a loose schedule given it’s a series I’ve already started.
In some ways it might be a bit early to judge this manga. While there were six chapters in volume 1, two of them were one shots that had been published previously and form part of the backstory. So we are only 4 chapters into the main story.
Having said that, the story captured my interest quickly and I liked the main characters. I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes next.
One of the draws is reading a manga written 25 years ago but set in 2024. It’s fun seeing what they got wrong in their predictions of the future!
I started re-reading Akira to see if I want to nominate it and I realized that it also takes place in the 2020s (despite being written over 40 years ago!)
But of course it’s an alternate reality after World War 3 so it’s not particularly accurate.
I am about half-way through Akira 1 and planning to go through the whole series (provided I don’t get sidetracked).
I reached page 100 today! I postponed it for a while because it’s level 32 on Natively and I know that it’s usually a challenge for me above level 30 but so far it’s quite fine. I suspect that the very casual way 金田 and the gang talk might cause some trouble to some readers and could have added a few levels. Or maybe it’s going to get harder later. I also like that there aren’t a million volumes.
I don’t think I’ll nominate it for the IMC however. A bit too violent and I don’t know if it would make a good read broken down in small weekly chunks. And there’s no digital version available as far as I know.
Alrighty, looks like the majority is in favour of continuing as normal. I was thinking we’d take a break this week as is typical for spin-off clubs while we hammer out some specifics (and also get ourselves started on the IMC book that’s replacing Twin Spica).
Would appreciate some thoughts on:
- One chapter a week
- Two chapters a week
- Th-… Three chapters a week?
- No preference
- NO BREAK! KEEP GOING!
- Just the one week’s break
- Two weeks’ break
- Unknown, I’m still waiting for my books to arrive
- No preference
Well, majority vote in both of last week’s polls was “eh, whatevs”… but the second-place getter was that we should continue one chapter a week starting this week. So here’s the new thread:
I figure we can keep reevaluating the pace as time passes.
Thanks for keeping up the threads. Happy to read one chapter a week, although it’s going to take us a long time to get through 16 volumes!
From my point of view, now we’ve upped the pace of とんがり帽子 to 2 chapters a week I’m less bothered about upping the pace in this manga. Like you say, we can reevaluate once we are further into the manga.
The slow pace of the story is what seemed to persuade most people we up the pace in とんがり. We shall see what the pace is like in this story as it progresses.
