Nah, seq only generates a sequence of numbers, nothing more. That sequence is then piped into xargs which we need to interpolate the episode number into the url. curl downloads the episodes one by one and should also tell you the DL speed etc.
His asset server is super slow, at least for me.

Gotcha. Yeah the server sucks. It’s also stereo 192 kbps mp3, which is a huge waste. For example eAAC 64 mono would sound just as good and file size would be 1/4 maybe.
I don’t know if he’s rate-limiting individual connections. If he does, then using parallelism could help. For that you’d need to install GNU parallel however. You could then just subsitute the xargs -I{} with parallel -j4 and you’d download 4 files in parallel. However, you can no longer see the progress of the individual downloads.
A vanilla approach would be to use custom increments and start multiple processes. Like this:
jobs=4; seq $jobs | xargs -I{} sh -c 'seq $(expr $0 + 7) $1 400 | xargs -I{} curl https://teppeisensei.up.seesaa.net/image/Nihongo20con20Teppei23{}.mp3 -O &' {} $jobs
That starts 4 background processes that’ll write to the console about their progress (but it’ll be difficult to tell who is talking). It may be better to just manually start n download processes and adapt the seq parameters by hand. (seq [first] [increment] [last])
I.e., when 4 jobs should be run in parallel the first would be seq 8 4 400 | ... the second would be seq 9 4 400 | ... etc.

Do you have any suggestion for how to do this? I’d like to compress these down once they d/l but am not sure how or what program can do it.

Yeah, download Audacity here:
Load up the MP3 file.
To downmix, resample and export WAV:
Tracks → Mix → Mix Stereo Down to Mono
Tracks → Resample. Choose the new sample rate.
File->Export->WAV and then save as 16-bit signed PCM.
Download NeroAAC encoder here: https://web.archive.org/web/20160923100008/http://ftp6.nero.com/tools/NeroAACCodec-1.5.1.zip
Use the command:
neroAacEnc.exe -br 32000 -if in.wav -of out.m4a
That’ll get you you’re AAC files.

Hi, it’s been a while since I posted anything (or done anything related to wanikani at all, the latter due to work).
Anyways, I saw this thread on a summary email and I’ve decided to lend you my help by writing a program to download all the podcasts one by one (more on that later). I know there are scripts already, this is just my implementation.
The difference between the script and my software is that while the script (at least the linux variant which is the one I’ve read) is that while the script downloads each one by generating the url, mine downloads an XML (which I think it’s used by itunes? not sure, oh well, it’s available from its homepage) which should have every official podcast. Another difference is that my program will use the podcast’s title as the filename.
As for the sequential downloads and why not to parallelize them, I’ve found that the server limits the speed at which a single file can be downloaded. Downloading many at the same time could help but since I trust @morteasd 's claims I haven’t bothered trying.

- Execute.
- Wait a loooong time, sadly. You can close the program at any time, it should not redownload the podcasts which have already been downloaded (however it will any that has been partially downloaded).

If you unzip it all into the folder with audio files (not included in the zip) and open the 000_hkbk.html in a browser you’ll get an indexed episodes list with descriptions and audio players (the 000_hkbk.html file should be at the same level as the audio files).
