Oh that’s true, it’s been so long that I’ve even forgotten about the premise of the whole thing. I guess the tsubaari blundered, they should have given the book to the king instead of a random tailor’s daughter.
第65話
Did not expect that Koco would fess up to K-dog. Interesting.
Tsubaarichan getting paired up with amnesia cop is very fortuitous but interesting.
Is her mission merely to deliver magic ink to the king? What else could be in that vial?
I liked the detail of ississ explaining that he wants people to evacuate both in order to protect them and also so that they wouldn’t get to see the wizards go full Super Saiyan and freak out.
Ch 64
I hope the anime adaptation is going to reach this point, because the scene where the student-teacher dreamteam look down and see blood and leeches in the water on p. 32 is going to be about 9 times more creepy and less confusing in color.
Ch. 65
That scene was also a great reminder of how easy it is to weaponize magic and how disastrous it would be in the wrong hands. Adorable interchange at the end, when it looks like Eathis just wants to keep the attack magic for himself. Don’t worry, Eath, there’s enough giant leech for everyone ![]()
Heh, yeah. Also, for a moment there I felt sure he was going to memory wipe her when he started drawing in his notebook.
I lolled hard at that the first time I read this. Also interesting that her staff got broken, so now she’s presumably stranded with Galga because she can’t contact her boss anymore.
Do we actually know that they are a tightly knit organization with a unified goal? Unless I have forgotten someone, so far we only know about four つばあり帽, five if you count Kustas.
On one hand, we have eyeball mask guy and Mr. Cat, who are trying to prove a point about the power of forbidden magic by having Koko use it of free will (maybe with a bit of encouragement). While they seem to concentrate their efforts on Koko this might simply be because she is the only one of perhaps many children they gave a magic picture book to who unexpectedly was made a とんがり帽子 (or all the other ones already blew themselves up
)
On the other hand, we have Ininia and her master, who seem to go for a top-down approach by trying to get into contact with the king.
I have no idea. More frustratingly, I’m not sure that the author knows either… I don’t get the feeling that the author knows precisely where she’s going with all that stuff. I hope I’m proven wrong.
Ch. 65
Why would he? Koko just provided him with another lead to the つばあり帽, which is the original reason he took her in. I’m more worried for Ininia at this point because we know how Quifrey can get when he spies a brimmed hat…
I’m half expecting there to be a turn of events where she restores his memory in a “I need your help, so you can have your powers back” situation.

Oh, he had no reason. But the scene leading up to it was so similar to when he memory-wiped Oru and Nolnoah…just talking and smiling normally and then wham! out comes the notebook…I guess it just triggered a flinch-reflex in me.
five if you count Kustas.
6 if you count Engendil.

That’s it exactly. The plan of the first two Tubaari was so badly thought out that I actually prefer to think of them as members of their own sect who accidentially magicked themselves out of common sense while experimenting with extreme body modifications. But no idea if that’s how it gonna turn out or not.

I’m losing track of the plot, why are K-dog and coko looking for kustas specifically?
Evil tsubaarichan and her adoptive gay dads makes for a fun sitcom premise. We also saw the outline of yet another tsubaari I think? I’m sure it’s going to be a well developed character with a compelling motive.
I’m losing track of the plot
Don’t ask me, I was following until they got out of the dragon’s mouth volume 5, after all, who does what and why is all very blurry to me. Still well drawn though.
Yeah that’s the inconvenient when the manga moves slowly and we read only one chapter a week. In hindsight I should just have read ahead like @Boodil did.
Ch 66
I’m losing track of the plot, why are K-dog and coko looking for kustas specifically?
Koko confessed to K-dog last chapter and now they’re trying to find a way to remove the tracking bracelets the Ininia/Kustas Tsubaari cell put on Koko and Tartar, I think. That, and K-dog still trying to find ways to get info about his eye. Out of the two, Kustas is the better target, because Koko still sees him as her friend, and she just saw him when things turned to mulch as the festival, so she knows he’s still in the area.

Definitely. The adorable duo managed to melt her frozen heart pretty quickly, though she still seems to be in denial about it.
The twist that Mr. Adorable is just able to take Galga as his apprentice and (legally?) re-teach him magic seemed pretty over-convenient to me, though. Remember when we were wondering why the magic police don’t just teach him magic again and concluded that there must be some sort of law that prevents this? And now it just doesn’t seem to be an issue anymore. We’re never going to see Amnesiac Wizard Prison Island at this rate.
I’m also still pretty satisfied with my decision to read ahead.

My impression is that this isn’t really “legit” and just a way to potentially fly under the radar for a while. IIRC K-dog had to register koco at the Tower to officially make her his 弟子, as far as I can tell this didn’t happen here. Also if I understand correctly Mr. Adorable hasn’t yet graduated to the point where he should be able to have 弟子 in the first place.
Admittedly all of this is rather murky. It’s not really clear how difficult/exceptional coko’s situation is and how difficult it is to just recruit random people as 弟子. It seems like the process was pretty straightforward. And more generally you’re right, if you can recruit non-wizards like koco as 弟子, why not do the same thing for wizards memory-wiped in the line of duty?
I feel like there are fundamental issues with the worldbuilding here (like the thing I mentioned in a previous week that it doesn’t make sense for the king to be unable to discover the secret of magic if he really wants to) but I don’t think it would bother me too much if the story moved along faster. I’m willing to suspend my disbelief, but you have to give me something else to focus on.

I might be misremembering, but isn’t the fact that Koko is originally a non-mage a secret to anyone outside of the K-dog atelier? Since they are not supposed to do that
But how would that work? “I found this kid in a ditch somewhere. She’s a wizard though, fo sho. Can I keep it? Ok thanks.”
We also saw the outline of yet another tsubaari I think? I’m sure it’s going to be a well developed character with a compelling motive.
Do you mean the silhouette on page 94? I think that’s just Ininia’s master. When she spoke with Kustas in volume 10, she had the same kind of tassels on her hat.

It’s been a long time since we read that, but just after Qifrey welcomed Koko to the atelier, he made a “phone call” to someone (I don’t think it has been revealed who that was), thanking them for allowing him to take Koko as 弟子 while also mentioning the 絵本. So I guess there is some (un)official business going on.
Thanks - I was trying to remember what happened around that time (but hadn’t got round to looking at it). It looks very murky when you read the whole section!

Wasn’t that implied to be Alayla? I vaguely remember him also thanking her in person in the scene where we first meet her and he gets Koko‘s hat from her. I also got the impression that Beldarut (who’s also a candidate for the phone caller, I guess) and the magic police know.
