Welcome back!
I’m still lurking because the WK forums are my only social media

Regarding writing…
A few years ago, Tofugu hired me for a short project to redraw all the radicals as vector graphics. Even within the radicals, there is a lot of repetition of certain shapes, and the several weeks I spent drawing them really cemented the fundamental shapes in my head.

I have pretty good visual memory, so my natural tendency while going through WK was to just remember the kanji without mnemonics and, by extension, without the radicals. And that’s fine for recall (e.g. reading). But for actual production (writing), they radicals are a huge aid! Now, having drawn the radicals for WK, I finally find myself looking at kanji as compositions of radicals… which I know was WK’s intent all along, but I never had incentive to use them that way. So now, as long as I can remember the radicals that make up a kanji, writing comes with very little effort.

Anyway, best of luck in your second time through!

Welcome back! Your post made me feel pretty happy as I could read and understand almost everything!

I originally intended to focus on writing as well as reading but I’ve fallen way behind on that. Maybe next time round…

Hey, rfindley! Nice to see you. That’s really cool that you got to work on that project for Tofugu, and I noticed how clean the radicals are looking these days. I remember it was a mix of kanji and images back in the day, depending on whether a radical constituted a kanji on its own. (Actually, the site looks great all around. There are so many little improvements. I remember starting the “visually similar kanji” topic and now it’s a feature!)

Nice to meet you, cathm. I honestly don’t think focusing on reading is a bad way to go. I originally studied Japanese so I could play JRPGs and read LNs in the native language and WK got me most of the way there on kanji, while I used Genki and then Imabi for grammar. But I think a focus on writing this time around will really cement some of the lesser-used characters.

Looking forward to taking the journey again!
