Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. Really fun chapter, and pretty easy to read too, I found. I was thinking he was making up an excuse as to why they left “early” after they did come and then didn’t stick around until panda finally woke up, since polar bear then says we had to leave early ---

Ah, that makes sense given that they left early due to the 恥ずかしい 寝相 and therefore Penguin would make up an excuse to avoid admitting that, but what confused me was the use of 途中 since it seems to imply that they remembered they had errands “on the way” there and not after they had arrived? Maybe I interpret 途中 too literally here (because of the 途 kanji), maybe it’s just “while we were visiting you we remembered that we had errands to run” and not “while we were on the way to visit you we remembered that we had errand to run” as I first interpreted it. ---

Penguin was using the second meaning. My understanding is that 用事がある is the ultimate excuse in Japanese. If someone has some business to attend to then that is reason enough for excusing oneself. No further explanation needed. ---
