しろくまカフェ: Week 1 Discussion (Chapters 1 and 2)

That’s an adult, and they’re talking about King Kamehameha, too. Since the context is one of them going to Hawaii.

Jumbo might be grown-up, but I’m not really sure he’s an adult. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, but the way he’s shouting it vaguely suggests a Dragon Ball reference too.

thank you thank you thank you  this made me chuckle while reading so I appreciate you putting this all together. It makes more sense now, especially since I knew the kamehameha attack but not much more about dragonball
Thanks again!

I’d never heard of Kamehameha until reading this manga, but I feel like I’ve come across it a few times since reading and watching Japanese content. Given there are a lot of links between Hawaii and Japan I wonder if he is a historical character that a lot of Japanese know.

Out of interest, it was only when I read Dragon Ball in Japanese that I realised the は in Kamehameha is the wave kanji, 波.

Thanks everyone!

Based on all these comments and the additional context from @kazzeon (thanks!), yeah, I’m wondering if there was some cultural awareness / another prior reference we don’t know about, and then the Dragon Ball connection really brought it to the forefront with this obnoxious Kamehameha cry.

At least that’s enough that I feel like that itch of what was that has been scratched. I was quite fine to skip a lot of unknown references to the puns here, or half piece them together, but that first one stuck with me for some reason because it just seemed so random.
