I had to double check whether スズメバチ was a type of wasp or a type of bee. Japanese wikipedia seemed to confirm it was what I would call a wasp. Apparently often referred to as a yellow jacket in North America - I’d not heard that term before.

I call them yellow jackets! (Southern USA) As a child I stepped on a nest that was in a wooden thing I was walking on and all the yellow jackets flew out and chased me I feel panda and penguin’s pain here.

I would call this a yellow jacket:
