I bought this ages ago when it was nominated, so I may as well read it now! A slightly later date might work better for me, but I’m in so many clubs it probably doesn’t make a huge difference.

Ooooh how sweet of you! I actually nominated this ages ago  Now I’m somewhat grown out of it, but I’m participating in the Natively Bingo Challenge, and one of the fields said “read a random book from your TBR pile” and guess which one was picked randomly
I also have another Bingo field that says “read one volume in a single day” and I’d like to attempt that with this book. Therefore I don’t think I will really participate in this club, but I’m happy to participate in the discussions and help with any questions y’all might have!

I see JPDB has this book and 9 total for the series. It might help with parsing kanji-light sentences.

Thanks @mitrac for reminding about the Jpdb deck, I’ve added it to the home post.

I also made the home post a wiki, incase anyone makes a vocabulary list, or wants to continue the club and read the rest of the books after this one is done (I’ll probably only read the first book)

Polls have closed, we’ll start on June 23 and read one chapter per week. I’ve updated the schedule in the op but unfortunately the version I’m reading doesn’t include page numbers so I couldn’t include those, but if someone wants to fill them in feel free.

Alright, it’s June 23 somewhere, Kuuku, prepare to be read. Thank you to @miss_yuzu for sharing page numbers

Oh dear. This pushes me to 11 book clubs which I’d decided was above my personal max! Oh well.

I was not expecting the first chapter to be this sad :sob:

Everyone was right about how light this book is with kanji. It wasn’t as big of an issue as I thought it was going to be though, it was actually nice to guess what the word was and then check with Yomitan. All of the onomatopoeias are torturing my brain though.

It was sad but pretty wholesome

I felt like the lack of kanji wasn’t too bad but with longer sentences there might be more of a need for breaks and seconded on onomatopoeia being hard. There’s so many of them in general.

I really like all the cooking scenes in between the story. They act like a reprieve in between all the things poor Kuku has to go through! The nori-butter-toast was a bit of a surprise for me. I might have to give it a try just to see what it tastes like!

The mayonnaise on asparagus had me in shock :astonished: There are some recipes in the back of the book, I think one was for orange sherbert? I want to try making it.

On page 66, line 8, Kuuku sees a freshly laid egg at the “door’s bottom.” Is this talking about the bottom of a refrigerator door? Or like, at the bottom of the door of a chicken coop I somehow missed? Or was that basket full of eggs in that illustration set beside the bottom of the door in the room they were in? Did I somehow skip something?

What I love about Bookwalker – is that they allow you to read a bit for a short amout of time for free. Ended up reading the whole first chapter.

If I manage to find a way to transfer money to Bookwalker, I will purrticipate.
Very nyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaice and kind children’s book love

I think it’s the entrance door to the house. Because Kuuku wanted to go back to his room, but then his mom was at the entrance and thats when they started talking, so I think the eggs had just been gathered and then the basket was set down near the door.
