お versus う

I Can’t seem to get kanji’s with お or う right. For example, 刀 is とう. Anybody got some tips on this that will make me less frustrated :innocent: ?

Words like (こおり) are exceptions. If you don’t know that it’s お, then it’s most likely う

It’s almost always ~おう. Only very few examples are ~おお, so just learn those as they come.

When おう or おお appear within a single kanji’s reading, おう is the spelling used for words of Chinese origin. おお is used for words of Japanese origin.
