Ahh thank you!!!
Might as well post an update since I’m here!
2h42m so far and 11% (18.768 char) of 容疑者Xの献身 read.
Was a while since I haven’t read that much in a day, loving it but also hard to stay focused more than 20-40 minutes at a time!
- 嵐のピクニック (0-8%), 7 pages, maybe 1 hour (club Week 1)
- 嵐のピクニック (8-15%), 7 pages, 40 min. Caught up with the club. Getting sleepy now.
Final Update!

Well, I was wildly optimistic in being able to get through two full manga volumes for this challenge, but it was still fun nevertheless and I really enjoying pushing myself.
Since I realised this morning I wasn’t going to finish Bluelock, I added a little bit more time by starting the first volume of Bungo Stray Dogs: Chuuya, Dazai Aged 15. It was the very first Japanese language manga I picked up back in March of '23 when I first decided I wanted to learn this language, and so to be able to pick it up now and just read through 30 pages relatively easily makes me realise how far I’ve come. I remember flipping through it at the time and it was entirely incomprehensible.
This challenge has also given me a good gauge of where my reading speed is at, averaging out at 2 mins per page. Definitely not quick by any definition, but this time last year it would probably have been taking me 10-15 mins per page, so again, really nice to be able to see the improvement in some measurable way.
Thanks @taiyousea for organising, I’m really looking forward to the next one!
Time for a family break, will be back at reading this evening, hopefully for 2 or 3 more hours!
Read 3h55m so far, 15.7% (26.879 char) of 容疑者Xの献身.
Today is not a good day for reading either as barely slept better last night, am still tired and am plagued by a headache which is going to be a noticeable hindrance for my endeavours.
Took some painkillers and hope that it will get better throughout the day.
When I picked up my reading around noon, I finished 葬送のフリーレン 1 after another session of 1 hour and 5 minutes, meaning that it took me 2 hours and 25 minutes for this volume.
I do have some thoughts about it but my headache is making it difficult to concentrate and form thoughts and I think that I’ll just keep it at short updates today and that I’ll try making a longer update tomorrow if I do feel better.
I’ll move over to the light novel now.

It feels so good to dedicate a day to read a book. Thank you @taiyousea for organizing this.
I continued the challenge on Friday and although I had tried to fend off all sorts of disturbances, some work stuff and some errands still snuck in my day and so I end the challenge with reading 献灯使 for 4.5 hours, during which I managed 32 pages. It’s a very beautiful book and by far not as hard as the L39 suggests, but I still have very many lookups and the occasional reread of a long and winding sentence, which slowed me down quite a bit.
soggy’s readathon goals
This readathon, I’d like to focus on prose/novel reading. I have 80 pages left of Japanese HP and I would like to finish it by the end of the year. With the assumption that my reading speed is about 10 pages per hour, I think I could make a modest goal of reading 30 pages from that today (3 hours). I also have this week’s werewolf survival game section to read, and could also choose a story from the Aozora advent to break things up.
Last year’s stats were 84 pages read (45 manga, 39 prose) in 4 hours. Will I read longer than 4 hours today? Will I read more than 40 pages of prose? Find out… later tonight!
Milestones:
Japanese HP:
10 pgs
20 pgs
30 pgs
40 pgs (stretch goal)

So I did some reading this weekend, so may as throw myself into the tracking here.
I was reading ご注文はウサギですか? to fill in one of the last two tiles on my Natively bingo
Between last night and this afternoon, I read 190 pages in… 3h27m, which finishes the manga as I read the first 70 pages earlier in the week. Even given the text density this was slow for me, but it actually didn’t feel as hard as that suggests. I must just be rusty after a few weeks of more casual reading.
Warmed up with this week’s club reading for 人狼サバイバル. Spoiler alert: the werewolf is still hidden.

Well, my Readathon time is done! Final results:
Title | Pages | Time |
---|---|---|
名探偵コナン Volume 15 | 173 | ~5h |
名探偵コナン Volume 16 | 54 | ~2h 15m |
Major Volume 4 | 186 | ~3h |
TOTALS: | 413 | ~10h 15m |
The last chapter of コナン V15 was the first chapter of a new case, so I decided to finish the remaining 3 chapters of that case before moving on to Major, which might have been a mistake. It was a very dense case, with a lot of Kansai-ben, so it definitely slowed me down! Major went a lot faster this morning, since it’s so much less text-heavy, but I ran out of time to read Volume 5. Oh well… Just comparing my reading pace for コナン, I was definitely faster than I was in the fall, so I’m very happy with my progress!
Already looking forward to the Spring Readathon - my plan is to try reading a light novel instead of manga for that one!
To everyone still reading - hope you’re having fun! And thank you @taiyousea for organizing this! I’ve definitely enjoyed myself!
A little slower than I’d like with my first HP reading session, but still feel like I’m warming up. This section feels a little heavier on vocab lookups (the forbidden forest chapter). Going to take a short break then come back!

Hit my first 10 page milestone for japanese hp! Got one freebie page from a chapter cover. Probably time for another break.

Haha nice. I don’t get those when reading digitally
Depends what kind of digital copies I guess Bookwalker digital copies usually do (and physical-aligned page numbers too)
Had some lunch then did another reading session, now I kind of want to lie down for a nap. Impressed by everyone who’s reading 8 hours but that’s definitely not me.

I hit the bed, and so day end. (I started before morning anyway, because night shift.)
Summary
- 2 Aozora stories (unknown advent) – 19 pages, 1 h 20 min
- 妊娠カレンダー (72-100%) – 28 pages, 2 h 50 min
- 本の読み方 スロー・リーディングの実践 (61-69%) – 12 pages, 1 h 30 min
- 嵐のピクニック (0-15%) – 14 pages, 1 h 40 min
Total – 73 pages, 7 h 20 min, 5 sources (because Aozora counts as 2, and of different themes and difficulties)
I more or less get the same number of pages as last time. The latter 3 books are in Bookwalker pages on Android tablet, in which number of pages isn’t much different from the paperback. Aozora website measuring is a little 適当. I took the number from the discussions here to get divided with (350).
I see the goal of 100 pages as a good possible goal, not an impossible nor futile goal, not to mention I can read Aozora stories better. First of all, tolerance – how much I can read per session, spending more time and getting more pages, without headache or wanting to disappear; how far can I follow the thread of the story in one session if I had good deal of time. On a good day, I can have continuous like 6 hours, but doesn’t mean I would be patient to read that long. (I think 2-3 hours would be fine.) I am not sure if I could stretch myself on the promised day, or simply measuring what I have at each instance of a day.
Thanks @taiyousea for giving a good challenge. Looking forward to the next one.
On ttsu reader new chapters look like this and count for 0%
And that is where I stop for today!
52k char (30% of the book) in 7 hours
Really impressed by those that managed to push more, I am exhausted now!
Well done everyone / do your best if you are still at it!
And of course thank you @taiyousea , this challenge is really fun, loving both to push for one whole day and to read everyone’s updates! (also this edition seems like many were reading コナン, I have bought the first volumes but haven’t tried them yet, maybe for the next challenge!)

I don’t have results to compare so this will serve as my first ballpark for the next event.
Even surprised myself a tiny bit as the different day schedule did prove pleasant. But also glad to be back to the normal. One thing to note for is that I can read more on somedays and probably should, unless work happens.
Count me in for the Spring Readathon.
Thank you @taiyousea for organizing this!
Good luck for the readers today.
