❄️ Winter Solstice 24-hour Readathon

The Winter Solstice 24-hour Readathon

:snowflake: :books: :snowman:

Dates: Saturday and Sunday, 21st – 22nd December

Hello, readers! The 24-hour Readathon event has returned for the shortest day of the year! If you’ve never participated with us before, readathons are a fun way to pack a ton of reading into a single day. It’s a good excuse to start a manga/novel/story/VN that you’ve been waiting to dive into, or finish some that you’ve been meaning to complete.

How it works: Choose a specific 24-hour period during the weekend of the 21st and 22nd, whenever it begins and ends in your local timezone, and read as much in Japanese as you can! Keep track of your reading in a way that makes sense for your medium: time, pages or characters – when you’re finished, report in and we’ll tally our collective amount together. There is no expectation for the amount you read, or the difficulty, and anyone is welcome to join.

:snowflake: Participation:

If you would like to join in, you’re invited to make a post with your goals: Are there any volumes you’d like to start/finish? How long do you think you can read in one sitting? How many pages do you think you can reach before time is up? Add some personal challenges if you’d like, or simply try to squeeze in a few extra pages to add to our tally.

Choose your Readathon time. Is Saturday or Sunday better for your schedule? Are you a night owl reading from 12pm Saturday to 12pm Sunday? Need to defer to Friday or Monday? Throughout your chosen 24-hour period, post updates with your progress. Let us know when you finish something, reach a milestone, or simply can’t read another word without your brain melting.

When your chosen day comes to a close, make a post with your results! Compare them to your Goals post, did you knock your expectations out of the park, or were you too ambitious with your plans? Did you finish anything that made you say “good riddance”? Did you catch up to a book club you were behind in?

→ Check out the Summer Solstice and Fall Equinox threads for some goals/updates/results inspiration :memo:

:snowflake: Results:

The results are a community tally, so every little bit you read contributes to our overall result. The Winter Solstice is dangerously close to multiple major holidays – can we manage to beat any of our previous records?? :scream:

FAQ

Do I need to read for 24 full hours?

No, this challenge takes place over a 24-hour period but you are only expected to read for the amount that you’re able during that time. Some of us may make it a personal challenge to read for as many hours within that period as possible, but even 1 hour of reading is an admirable feat.

Can I tally my time from the entire weekend?

No, the addition of a weekend rather than one specific 24-hour period allows flexibility for those who want to participate but would otherwise be inconvenienced by one date. The winter solstice event itself takes place on Saturday, 21st December – feel free to use this date as your chosen 24 hours if you wish to stay true to the holiday.

Do the books need to be in Japanese?

Yes, this challenge is meant to encourage us to read more Japanese. If you read other language books, please do not count them in the overall tally.

Am I required to post updates?

No, updates are simply a fun way for us to create a community event, but they are not necessary for participation.

Please update and tally as you complete your Readathon day  :tada:

Kinda know the general amount of time you read, but not down to the second? Please add it! Imprecise metrics are great, just as long as you’re reading :japanese_ogre:

Only pages or character counts are necessary for a single source, but please try not to duplicate your results in both columns. The multiple tally methods are primarily for those reading alternative items without defined pages (or, similarly, without defined character counts).

Unfortunately thats the day I go back to america, otherwise I would love to.

56k characters for 2574 pages? Typo?

Last time I tracked pages and not characters, so I didn’t contribute to character total but I did contribute to page total

Like @PotatoDancer said, it’s because I request that participants track one or the other (edit: for a single source, different tracking for different sources is okay), but not duplicate in both columns because then the results get iffy. So that’s 2574 pages and 56.5k characters, which come from no-page epub books or visual novels or the like.

ah, ok that makes more sense

:books::tea: taiyousea’s winter readathon goals :snowflake::open_book:

Wrapped up in blankets with hot tea and a book sounds simply heavenly to me, so I’m hoping to beat my previous reading records by a landslide. In both the Summer and Fall events, I only just made it to 5 hours of reading before I couldn’t take another word. I read more pages in Summer, but the reading difficulty level was much higher in Fall. It’ll be fun to see where I land this season! And if I can finish my 2024 book bingo in time :weary:

My 24 hours: Saturday, 21st December [1]
Goals: I want to break my previous results! >5hrs, >460 pages :raised_hands:

Must Finish!!: These two are the final pieces of my bingo card, so they are my priority!
:spades: 黒執事 1 (manga) - currently at 53%
:superhero: 僕のヒーローアカデミア 1 (manga) - currently at 36%

Mid-Reads: Already started, would like to work on, not a priority
:shinto_shrine: すずめの戸締まり (novel) - currently at 8%
:milky_way: 春の旅人 (novel) - currently at 5%
:cat2: 三毛猫ホームズの宝さがし (novel) - currently at 3%

Want to Start: I probably won’t get this far haha… unless…
:eight_pointed_black_star: ナルト 5 (manga)
:mage: とんがり帽子のアトリエ 5 (manga)
:mechanical_arm: 鋼の錬金術師 3 (manga)

I’m excited to get one last good reading session in before the new year!! :fireworks::clinking_glasses::champagne::snowflake:

頑張ろう!!

  1. Possibly will actually be late-Friday to late-Saturday as I prepare for guests arriving on Sunday :face_with_peeking_eye: ↩︎

I’ll join, though I’m not 100% sure about what I’ll read yet. I’m thinking I’ll probably either start Fatal Twelve and see how far I can get, or alternatively read some light (or even web) novels.

I’m traveling that weekend to spend time with a friend. But perhaps after that (Sunday night) when I’m taking the 16h train to my family up north :eyes: On one hand it’s easy to get distracted by the scenery outside, on the other hand there’s not much to do on the train, so I’m probably going to read anyway :high_touch:

oh whoops, I think I registered the estimated amount of pages as well as the total characters I’ve read, ehehe :caught_durtling: ごめん!

Hmmm. I fly out on the 20th to visit family so I can’t do 21 or 22. I could do the Friday 20th though since I’ll be at the airport/on a plane for a good chunk of the day.

That wasn’t the rule when I started the first event and I don’t think I explained it well in the second event, so it’s definitely my fault :face_with_peeking_eye: But overall participation was so high in the Fall readathon that I choose to believe the results still would’ve been excellent without any duplications :relieved:

Possibly a perfect chance to get a lot of reading done  If you read on Friday, you’re more than welcome to reply with your results on Saturday/Sunday when you’re settled post-travel. The great thing about there being such a spread of timezones represented is that the readathon thread is usually consistently active at all hours over the weekend. A delayed results post wouldn’t be out of the ordinary at all!

Yayyy so excited! I think I’ll be free on Sunday to participate. Will make a goals post the week before.

Looking forward to this! I’ll be on a long flight on Saturday the 21st, so I’m planning to do my reading then.

Unsure if I will even remember this the day of, but I hope I can do Sunday morning to afternoon.
If I haven’t finished Yotsuba 4 and 5 by then, then I’d like to read as much of those volumes as I can; Koe no Katachi volume 1; finish this one Japanese Intermediate graded reader. If I have finished all or many of these things by then, then a couple of hours of Pokemon Scarlet is the goal.

Don’t know what I will read yet or which day I can join, but count me in

You may, though honestly I think there’s a pretty good chance I’ll continue reading it before the 21st and just go with Fatal Twelve for the actual readathon day
