Told my boss (and one of my colleagues) that I’m leaving…gosh it was nervewracking, even though it went totally fine and they were both happy for me. But the nerves really took it out of me, so I was not very useful for the rest of the day!
Told the rest of my department that I’m leaving. Phew!! Now I feel kind of relieved finally. It’s starting to diffuse through the rest of the office, which is good.
Great softball game today! First we were down 4 - 1, then we went crazy and made it 9 - 4, then had a bad defensive moment and went 9 - 8, then 10 - 8, then 10 - 10 (!), then held them at 10 very stylishly / impressively in the top of the 7th and WON with a walkoff homer. Everyone went nuts, I don’t think I’ve ever seen our team get so hyped lol. One of our team members is leaving for a (cool) job out in Utah so it was good to have such a memorable game to send her off.
Same! This time I was super careful and made sure to catch up with makuuchi every day so I got to completely avoid spoilers It was really good. It was nice to have a relatively injury-free basho (sad for Wakanosho, I feel like he was really on a run before he went 休場). The yokozuna didn’t look amazing, but I’m glad that Onosato got a (abema voice) 勝ち越し and stuck it out for the full 15.
Sleepy…today I discovered that that awards thing work is pushing on my is way more work than I thought! Even though I’m leaving in a month, there’s still a lot for me to do with it before then! Hmm!
complaining! about work
So awards work consists of: putting together a monthly list of potential awards (with deadlines during that month) to submit our books to, getting it approved by the head editor, and submitting the nominations. You start making each list by looking at the previous year’s list for that month.
The editorial department has our authors fill out an “author questionnaire” document, which consists of info about them and their book that various depts need – including a list of awards they’d like us to nominate their book for. We have to incorporate those requests into the monthly lists of awards, too. It turns out the woman who’s been doing awards was checking the entire year’s worth author questionnaires, like 20 - 30 separate documents, to check for award requests, EVERY MONTH! Just checking the same docs over and over again!!! What!! And the docs just have the names of the awards, not like the deadlines or anything, so I guess she was just looking up every award to see the deadline month etc…every time??? I felt insane when I realized this lol.
So then I started compiling all the author award requests from 2026 into one spreadsheet and ohhhh my god. There are so many lmao. I felt like my brain was evaporating looking at that sheet. And I haven’t even started checking when their deadlines are… I guess the only saving grace is that I only need to put together the lists for September and October (and submit nominations for August). But to do that I think I need to go through all the author requests anyway to make sure I don’t miss any for those two months??? Which is going to take 3000 years??? Urghhhhhhhh
Tomorrow I have to into the city for a doctor’s appt so hopefully I can get myself some sort of treat while I’m there. And I get to sleep in…woo!
Today was kind of a drag! I went into the city for my appointment – 40 min on the train then a 20 min humid walk – only for the appointment to be less than five minutes and for the doctor to just tell me I’m fine. So why did I have to go all the way in, then!! I would’ve been pissed on a normal day, but I have a migraine today wooo hoo ha ha ha. So the whole time I also felt a) totally incoherent and b) like my head was going to explode Sigh. As consolation I went to get boba and they were out of tapioca pearls (the whole point), so no boba. I went to the bakery and got a treat at least. But wow. I got home and was just totally wiped. Thankfully I don’t have to go anywhere tomorrow!
Played a lotttt of Fantasian today. Right now there’s a bunch of bosses I have the option to go beat, but all of them are just kicking my ass. On all of them I get REALLY close and then they go super saiyan and kill me in their final phase. Coooooool cool. I guess I’ll just try and overlevel a bit and then go back…?
Got a good start on 夏子 2 today. Working from home tomorrow so I should be able to read in the morning.
Worked from home today, just slogged through awards all day. Ugh. Three more weeks…
Someone I follow on bsky was reading ARIA and I thought it looked cool, so I got it digitally a couple months ago. Started it on a whim today – I’m only one chapter in but I like it so far! It’s about this girl Akari who travels to the planet Aqua (formerly Mars, now terraformed) to become a gondolier in the city of Neo Venezia. I’m trying to NOT look stuff up…!
We lost 13 - 12 but it was fun. My friend and fellow spectator is back from vacation after a month so that was good. And I finally got to talk to some 同じ年 guys who are always there but I never get a chance to chat with (fellow video game enjoyers…with good taste…huzzah!).
Started playing the new fan translation of (immensely influential, seminal, historic, etc. game) Kamaitachi no Yoru on my PHONE of all things. (for deets on the game’s importance, see here!) I probably could make it through the original jp version (there’s even a jpdb vocab list) but for this first run I kind of just want to enjoy. And I am enjoying it so far! I love me a good mystery. Plus, @Zakarius showed up:
Nothing much to report today. Went out for ice cream for lunch – I had sweet corn blackberry jam and smores. The sweet corn was really good but sadly the ben & jerry’s smores is still the one to beat.
I am soooo ready to be done with my job. 19 more days!
