Ended up reading 38 pages. Took me a few hours, but I am not sure how much of that was actual reading and how much was Wikipedia-rabbit-holing
Reason #1 as to why I’m so slow at reading
My first hour is done and I finished Vol. 1 of 四月は君の嘘!! I’ve been in a maaaajor reading slump over the past two months, so this was my first plunge back into Japanese text in a while. My speed was slower than it used to be but I was pleasantly surprised by how many vocab words from this volume I remembered from back when I started it in April.
It’s a really gorgeous day today! I think I’m going to pop over to a cafe for my next reading session ^–^
+1hr 5mins, 138 pages
YAY!!! Congrats on finishing your book!
This one got buried in the physical book stack and I kinda forgot I hadn’t finished it until pretty recently: 気になってる人が男じゃなかった 1 | L22 . A slower read without furigana and a as a paper volume
them….. … green music yuri. good. like injecting pure sugar straight into my veins
Needed some good yearning music for reading this, so car seat headrest it is. They must mention csh in the manga, because there’s a song the official playlist, but it might be in the 2nd volume
+1 hour, 100 pages
Time for a nice nap, and then probably time to finish off とんがり帽子
It’s 11 pm and I finished my book!!! There are still a few 番外編 chapters left, but the main story is done. It’s already past my usual bedtime but I just had to finish it! Sped through the last two chapters like crazy because it was so exciting.
Also I stopped by Natively a few hours(?) ago and saw one of @taiyousea’s status updates at the top of the global activity list and it felt very community-ish.
I only tracked the time for one chapter and use it to calculate my totals so they’re probably not exact, but my total is adding up to 34k characters or 4 hours spent reading.
I’m so surprised at what’s possible and glad I managed to reach my goal and finish this book that I’d been slowly chewing on for so long. Thank you very much @taiyousea for organising and everyone for the company :))
so many books finished today!!!
My goal today was to read Vol. 4 of よつばと! from beginning to end. Finished at 17:40 Montreal time. Didn’t calculate exact reading time but I would guess about 3.5 total hours. This was fun! It was a great chance to gauge how much my reading skills have improved (and they have, considerably - I was able to free-read the whole volume without a dictionary and understand the overall with little trouble, and I’d say about 60-70% of the details).
I’ll be participating in the Read Every Day Challenge this summer, in which I’ll go back and read each chapter with dictionary help, make vocab lists, etc. This was a great kickstart! Thank you @taiyousea for putting this together.
It’s become a bit overcast outside now, but I took advantage of the previous sunniness to have lunch outside and finish Vol. 2 of ちいさな森のオオカミちゃん. Even though I’m not a major fan of slice-of-life, I thought the themes were cute and the final few pages in this one got me lightly choked up :') Also, the scenes with Pii-chan the bird were super adorable omg
+55mins, 154 pages
My total: 2hrs, 292 pages
I’m fully obsessed with this series, I have the second volume in ebook format but I want to continue buying the physical editions and keep them forever
Every time I see one of our names on the global feed I get that same feeling
Thank you for participating!! 34k characters is incredible
This is amazing I’m so glad the readathon could help kickstart your summer reading
Great job on reaching your goal!
I’ve been keeping track of all my reading in a notepad all day, and when I added it up just now it came to exactly 100 pages in 10 sources. It’s a shame I didn’t read them in an round number of hours.

how long it takes me to read anything is all over the place. Over an hour for 14 pages, then 15 minutes for 16. I only stayed up late for the challenge so I should head bed now probably, g’night.
Update 2 | Home post | Time read: 1hr 3m (1hr 23m total)
Spent longer out and about today than I expected, didn’t get home until around 5, but I’ve got some ブラック (‘black coffee’ - a word for I learned from today’s reading!) and am cozy on the couch ready for an evening of reading.
This last hour I read Chapters 119 and 120 of 極主夫道. Don’t think I’m going to make it to my goal of 5 hours, でも頑張る!
nap complete, and boy I needed it to do this one lol
girl, same.
とんがり帽子のアトリエ 1 | L26 is a step up in difficulty from the other manga I’ve been reading today. No furigana on most things (including variant kanji like 樹), lots of coined terms, the explanation of a magic system, and some kind of intentionally vague dialogue in places. I was reading with the book club for about half of it, but picked up and finished the rest for today.
Since this was 27 (orange) when I started, but has dropped to 26 (purple) before I finished it, I’m kinda torn on whether or not to count it for my book club bingo square, but
looooooooooooooooooooooooove where this story is going though
+1.5 hours, 160 pages
Update 3 | Home post | Time read: 49m (1hr 52m total)
Checked off 2 of my goals!
3 chapters of 極主夫道14
7 entries of 小学生なら知っておきたい教養366
Luckily the last 3 entries for 366 weren’t as difficult as this morning’s
On to 葬送のフリーレン!
I did not finish another volume for this update, but I did clock another hour of reading! I switched over to Vol. 3 of Atelier because I’ve been on the edge of my seat to read more for months. This volume is significantly more difficult than its predecessors imo, and far more difficult than what I read immediately beforehand, so it’s taking me longer to read. But I don’t mind the slowness! I feel like I always absorb more vocab from this series than most other manga because I am so desperate to know the minutia of what is happening
pick your head up, king…
your とんがり帽子 is falling…
+1hr, 56 pages
My total: 3hrs, 348 pages
Up to around 4 hours of reading total, including a little from yesterday and some during breaks at work today. ~80 pages. Some of it was difficult because it’s dialogue about custody for a kid and it wasn’t easy to keep track of who was talking. Losing my sense of who’s talking is a common issue in manga or novels for me. Other section with more lookups but easier to follow was the description of a big mansion they go to. It’s been an interesting day for reading.
Probably not finishing this book today since it’s around 200 pages but I put a sizable dent in it. Should be able to write it up on my study log sometime during the plant shutdown week. I feel like I’m getting better at reading as I read more but I don’t have the strict numerology to prove it. I expect there’s some critical mass kind of turning point in reading where it gets easier but getting there takes a lot more reading than I currently do.
Thanks for the challenge. I hadn’t read Japanese in a little while but this helped me focus on it today.
My book was おチビがうちにやってきた book 3, I think the machine translation for the subtitle gave back separation crisis. Basically the toddler’s real blood family aunt shows up wanting to adopt her so clearly she has to be bad or incompetent so the main character can keep parenting the 2 year old.
Flipped around through my bookshelves and downloaded stuff and bookwalker and looked at a few things that weren’t catching my interest, and decided to finally settle down and try the first volume of 東方茨歌仙 ~Wild and Horned Hermit. 1 | L30?? again. The last time I tried this was sometime last summer during Operation Clean-out Javerend’s Bookshelf, and I read the first chapter and decided that it was way too hard for me at the time
It is still pretty challenging but readable. It’s definitely not under level 30, imo. Full furigana is welcome, though, I probably would’ve put it down without it. So much to look up otherwise Lots of buddhist and shinto vocab, some old timey speech, fake magic words and spells, science/sci-fi explainers, really just runs the whole gamut of possible ways you can make reading something kind of a pain
ch 2 summary from the touhou wiki, for a taste of the whirlwind it is to try to read this story
Summary: Above the Underground Geyser Center, Kasen, concerned that evil spirits are appearing above ground, puts up a sign declaring “only people who want to die should come near” (due to the presence of poisonous gases and evil spirits). At the Hakurei Shrine, Sanae tries to explain to Reimu and Marisa that nuclear reactor in Former Hell is inefficient. Kasen drops by to listen in, and Sanae reveals that Kasen also lives on Youkai Mountain. Sanae then gives them an explanation of cold fusion and asks Reimu to call upon the god of metals to provide some palladium alloy for an experiment. A few days later, Sanae and Kanako perform the experiment successfully.
Decided to put a pin in that after chapter 2. I’ll finish this sooner rather than later, but after doing as much as I already have today it’s kind of a mess
+1.5 hours, 60 pages
It’s getting late so I’m closing my reading for the day!
I originally had planed to continue reading a VN after a finished all the manga book club reads, but reading more than I usually do was a bit more draining than I expected, so I instead switched to a couple manga samples I had around that I wanted to check.
My final results:
Manga pages read: 188
Total time spent reading: 3h47m
Average reading speed: 0.83 pages per minute (ppm)
The speed varied wildly between the different mangas, which makes sense since the difficulty levels were so different. The manga I read the fastest was Neko ni ha neko no gohan (1.96 ppm, one of the manga samples), while the slowest one was
Tsumugu Otome to Taishou no Tsuki (0.28 ppm, a text-dense 4-koma story in the taishou era sprinkled with dated terms)
I enjoyed everything I read today, but the two manga samples were surprisingly nice and relaxing, in particular Neko ni ha neko no gohan, which is a fun cooking-for-cats story.
Thank you @taiyousea for organizing this event, it was pretty fun reading everyone’s progress during the day!
Another hour down while I pause and make some dinner (it feels so weird to have spent my entire day between this thread and various manga tabs ahaha). While reading this time, I remembered the Atelier Spotify playlist that I found back in April and the orchestral swell of this song hit right at a major pearl-clutching action moment in the story and everything was suddenly so cinematic
+1hr, 65 pages
My total: 4hrs, 413 pages
I’ve had the same experience recently, I’m glad we could find some new focus together Thanks for reading along with me!
reaching the end of this summary like SCRATCHES HEAD CONFUSEDLY
You officially tipped our collective page count over the goal!! Amazing stats! I’ve never calculated my page-per-min speed but now I have to know
Decided to power through and finish Vol. 3 of とんがり帽子のアトリエ, it was just too exciting to put down I need to get up and give my eyes a long break, maybe I’m done for today or maybe I’ll come crawling back for a few more pages before midnight pfft ahaha. I can’t believe I finished 3 volumes today
Granted, they’d all already been hovering somewhere between 10% and 20% completed, but it feels nice to have checked some items off my list that have been staring me down for weeks
I won’t add my final total to the results post until tomorrow, just in case I sneak a few more pages tonight. This has been such a fun way to knock out some reading goals, thank you guys so much for joining Will we manage to topple our time goal??
+45mins, 71 pages
My total: 4hrs 45mins, 484 pages
It was fun to wake up this morning and see what you all read in the meantime! It sounds like this was great to get a lot of us over the line for some reading goals!
And the great mystery is how @javerend managed huge chunks of reading both during my daytime and night-time hours that should get us over the line for our time goal!
Midnight draws near(ish), so one final update for the night.
After scratching my head at touhou for a while, decided to grab some dinner and see if I could knock out another volume of something before midnight. Was about 9pm by the time I sat back down to read.
僕の心のヤバイやつ 2 | L22 Ended up settling on this, a series that both @Jintor and one of my discord friends have exalted greatly and told me that it gets significantly better as time goes on. Still cute, occasionally a lil odd, but enjoyable
+1 hour, 160 pages
But I’m calling it there, I think the tank is finally empty

Ended up breaking pretty much every possible expectation of what I was going to do today, this was a ton of fun Thanks to @taiyousea for putting this together and giving me more excuses to do stupid challenges, and thanks to everyone else for reading along! Hope everyone had a good time, and hope the people starting late can still have a good time too!
I’d say this challenge definitely kicked me out of the reading slump I’ve been in, even just reading more 怪人二十面相 leading up to today to get ready for it.
Looking at my big calendar o stats, the last time I read more than this amount of manga in a whole month was in December of last year! Today ended up being independently a record manga reading day (previous 320 pages) and a record text reading day (previous 37 pages = ~12k chars) at the same time!
