Volume 3 Summary

Long-awaited by fans all over the world! The creator himself made a comic of the undersea pure love RPG !!

The Sea Empire, the birthplace of the sea witch “Wadanohara”, has been invaded by the Totsusa Empire. But when the Princess of the Sea Empire is attacked by the Princess of the Usagi Empire, she is forced to fight back - but after much thought, the two are reconciled.
Far away, Samekichi, a former familiar of Wadanohara, is thinking: “I’m sure I’ll be able to protect you.”
What is the true meaning of Samekichi’s thought?
Now, all the truth will be revealed.

I’m finally finished with this week’s reading! As every week I still have some questions:

I’m not entirely sure about the second part here. I currently think that as a whole it could be translated as being this happy, surely it can’t be. But does the second part imply that before he was this happy, he didn’t think it was possible or that this happiness can’t be/wasn’t real because he had some unsolved issues with shake-san?

I wanted ask about 出さない. I believe in this context it means not touch/not harm, but I can’t find an entry like this in jisho… That’t why I wanted to check, if my translation of this panel is correct: If you do as I say, I will not touch that child in your arms.

I’m pretty sure I understand what this means, but I’m not totally clear about the story context. Do we see a flashback of the events after which Same-kichi was labelled a traitor? Or is this even earlier? Also: what “cruel things” is he referring to? Did he himself tell Wadanohara that he is a traitor?

Just one chapter left! I’m excited to see how the story wraps up! :grinning:

I am not completely sure, but my understanding is that here Samekichi is using the grammar construction ～ことはない, but it’s slightly tricky to detect because he injected きっと between ことは and ない.

So Aことはない literally means “there’s no such a thing as A”, where A is a phrase of some sort. However, here A is in the past tense (気持ちになった) and ない is also in the past tense. That changes the meaning from “There’s no such a thing as A” to “There was never such a thing as A again” - the past tense implies that it did happen once. The きっと just adds emphasis (“for sure”).

Here sentence A is “came to feel happy to that degree” / “feeling that happy”, and combined with the ことはない it’s something like “For sure, there was never such a thing as becoming that happy (again)”.

This implies that he became that happy, but this couldn’t last - which is what he explains in the next panel:

Here, he implies this level of happines led to him to neglect the things he ought to have done - as you mentioned, this probably includes solving the issues regarding Shake-san.

I agree with your translation. The original expression is 手を出す, which you can find in jisho, but since in here 手 is the topic of the sentence, it cannot be combined with を, so it turns into 手は出す.

I am also curious about page 263, it wasn’t clear to me either…

Ultimately, if you strip away some of the extra stuff and combine the sentences together, what you get is:
あんなに幸せな気持ちになったことは
“As for the fact of having become that happy”
なかった
“it did not exist”
Or to put it more simply, ‘I had never been that happy before’.

See: every interaction they had in Volume 1. He can’t tell what really happened or else he risks triggering Syake-san’s curse, so he has to pretend he doesn’t care about her to driver her away from the sea.
