Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Finally the girl makes her long-awaited appearance.

I was surprised how long both 暦 and 和音 take to realize that their misunderstanding about what happened before was the result of a paralllel shift. Both must be aware of its existence, as 暦 has experienced it himself 5 years ago (grandfather dead / not dead / dead) and 和音 is wearing the indicating device.

Lol. You should’ve run this book club. You’re so much more on top things than me.

Too much work.

To be honest, that’s one of the reasons I started reading way faster from this point on.

Yup! It feels like compared to the previous time when 暦 figured it out almost instantly, this time the suspense is laid thick.
And also this week’s part ends on a cliffhanger pretty much.

I couldn’t stop myself and ended up on page 100 or so. But big props to @seanblue for reading the book in a week!

This week’s reading was quite interesting. Looking forward to what happens next.

One question please - At 24%

卒業前に何か記念になることをやろうだとか、卒業式の後にカラオケに行こうだとか、みんな楽しそうなことを話していた。

I think this is the first time I’ve seen だとか used after the volitional form of a verb. Is this somehow different from a normal Verb+とか used to express non-exhaustive lists of actions? Does the だとか add some different nuance or something?

The only thing I could find on だ + とか is this answer on HiNative

I haven’t read this week yet myself to know if that matches the context, though, so if somebody comes in with a better answer, trust them over my quick search.

I also don’t know if that explanation makes sense, but when I searched yesterday I found a similar answer (I’m pretty sure by a different person), though I don’t have the link anymore.

I feel it’s the equivalent of ~だろうが~だろうが. The volitional form before might also be meaningful.

Notice that the overall structure of “whether something X or something Y, something Z” is similar.

I wonder if there’s a parallel universe where I don’t loathe 暦…

This has been my favorite weekly reading so far. I like stories that focus on daily life (in part because it’s good for picking up useful wording) and am looking forward to where this heads!

Yes, quite an unlikable protagonist so far for me as well…

Had to basically speed read through the weekly reading, because genius me forgot that it’s friday and he has a ton of reading left to do. if only I was as smart as calendar

my opinion

Starting the chapter off with Koyomi saying that he doesn’t need to study at all or read the textbooks in advance, or most anything to get the best grades is definitely an odd choice. I do feel that basically the first section of this part was koyomi mainly humble bragging about just how smart he is. But I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and say that it’s probably because his father is quite smart instead of it being the author’s dream or life story. Though I do think that this part is already leagues better than the introduction. Once we left the “look at me, I’m so smart, but also sad :frowning:” part, the actual meeting with the girl and the parts after that do have me intrigued. So I’m definitely looking forward next week’s this week’s reading

Running a week behind due to my Grad School thesis, but I actually really enjoyed this chapter! I knew very little about this book going in, but I was wondering when we would finally meet the girl Glad the ball is rolling now!

Quick clarification question. I believe that Koyomi is still the narrator for all of the “I’m such a massive genius” part, but then when he described Kazune as the top-scoring student three months ago, does that imply that since Koyomi stopped trying, she rose to take his spot?

Yep, that’s what has happened

I thought more accurately he intentionally started tanking his scores to be more “friendable” or something like that.
