Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

That’s some serious dedication to customer service! Interesting that the incense here is apparently readily available – the stuff in the original rakugo was “limited amount, when you run out that’s it”.

(I have a friend with no sense of smell; he’s written an FAQ about it.)

That’s what I thought, too - although I would prefer that the sales representative would contact me through usual means instead of suddenly floating in the air in my appartment.

Due to chemotherapy I had lost my sense of smell for a long time and I found it very annoying. I couldn’t quickly check whether food was still good by sniffing it and I wouldn’t notice when something was scorching. I once visited a friend at his home and all the other persons agreed that there was a strong aroma spread by a humidifier, but I couldn’t smell anything even when I stuck my nose into it. On the other hand I couldn’t smell malodors either. I was very happy when my sense of smell finally came back gradually after several months.

I loved this story! I like the wholesomeness of how much she loved her cat and I also like how it ties in subtly with the other stories we’ve read so far. I could relate to the bit about not smelling stuff cause you’re so allergic, but thinking that going to the hospital is too much of a faff so just settling for over-the-counter stuff and accepting the lack of (orーin my caseーlessened sense of) smell. Reading your posts made me realise that it’s a privilege to be able to make that decision in the first place.

This story gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling. I have a rather long list of dogs and cats I’d love to have the chance to meet again. It would be so hard to choose.

I used to think that out of all the senses, lack of smell would be the least bothersome. I knew a girl once who had no sense of smell since she was a baby, and she lightheartedly joked about not having to suffer bad smells like the rest of us. But when talking more seriously, I soon realized that lack of smell can even be dangerous - bad smells warn us. I also think that smell may be one of the senses most closely connected to memory. It’s happened to me quite often to smell something in the air and immediately be taken back to a memory in the most vivid way. We have almost no dedicated vocabulary to describe smells, which is surprising, given the wide variety of them, and the emotions or reactions they can cause. I thought it was lovely that the sales representative took the time to describe the smell for her - but rather sad that no one else had ever thought to do so before.

The marketing bit was really funny. You have to admire such dedication to the customer’s needs. I’d definitely give them 5 stars :joy:

I enjoyed this one too. It was pretty cute. Also, I just about lost it when she 日本語上手’d Tei-san lmao
